Brookeville, N.Y. – The No. 10 Millersville field hockey team knotted the score with No. 6 C.W. Post at 2-2 with 11 minutes to play to take action into overtime in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference fight to the finish. The Pioneers, however, netted a goal off of a penalty stroke to nab the win and hand Millersville a 3-2 defeat Monday afternoon at Hickox Field.
Millersville (6-7, 0-3 PSAC East) got on the board at 19:43 on a breakaway play via the freshmen duo of
Brittany Troutman and
Champayne Hess. Troutman sent the ball up the middle to Hess who slammed the ball from 15-yards out to the back of the Pioneer cage. It was the Marauders' first shot of the contest.
C.W. Post's Amy Lillis tied things up five minutes later off of a cross from Amanda Nann. Nann sent a pass from the left side of the goal as Lillis tapped it in past goalkeeper
Sara Dickinson.
The Pioneers (7-4, 1-2 PSAC East) took a 2-1 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the half when Carlee Dragon registered an unassisted goal with a shot that deflected off of the left post into the cage. The squads went into halftime with the same score.
The second half of action remained quiet as both teams struggled to find the back of the cage. With 11:22 showing on the clock,
Ashley Weber sent the ball to
Emily Woodland who placed herself in front of the cage. Woodland dribbled around Pioneer keeper Courtney Colern and put the ball into the lower left corner to send the game into overtime.
Eleven minutes ticked by in the overtime period as the Marauders and C.W. Post each got off four shots. After the Pioneers received a penalty stroke opportunity, Nann stood face-to-face with Dickinson at the stroke mark, sending the ball past her pads to the back of the cage to end the period and notch the win for the Pioneers.
Dickinson set aside three shots for Millersville in the 82 minutes.
The Marauders return home on Saturday, Oct. 16 to host the undefeated No. 2 Warriors from East Stroudsburg. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
