Cheyney, Pa. - Millersville entered Wednesday's PSAC East contest with Cheyney fresh off its season debut in the national rankings and riding a seven-game winning streak. The Marauders had also won 38-straight meetings against Cheyney. But that's why the games are played. Millersville scored just 17 first half points, and Cheyney capitalized, handing the Marauders their first PSAC East loss of the season, 67-58.
Millersville (14-4, 4-1 PSAC East) was buried by 5-of-30 shooting in the first half and trailed by 17 at the break. The Marauders clawed their way back by pouring in 41 points in the final 20 minutes, but Cheyney slowed the momentum late by drilling 10-of-10 free throws in the final 1:24.
Cheyney (6-10, 3-2 PSAC East) snapped a skid against Millersville that dated to 1990. The Wolves also stopped the Marauders' second seven-game winning streak of the season. During that streak, no team scored more than 57 against the Marauders, and Cheyney became the first team to score more than 60 against Millersville since IUP totaled 67 on Jan. 3.
Three Marauders scored in double figures.
Mashira Newman led with 16 points but scored nine at the foul line while shooting 3-of-14 from the floor. Senior
Raquel Green provided a steady offensive presence with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Classmate
Aiesha Bellamy added 10 points and four assists.
Cope Hall provided the Wolves little home court advantage before Wednesday as they were just 2-5 in the building. While the Marauders strugled mightily in the first half, Cheyney knocked down 15-of-25 shots (60 percent) to build a 34-17 advantage at the break. The Wolves were aided by Millersville committing 14 of its 19 turnovers in the first period as well.
Nearly five minutes into the second, Cheyney had extended the lead to 20 on a jumper from Stephanie Orji, who led the Wolves with 13 points. Millersville's defense needed to spark the offense. Newman and Dominique Stroman combined for 12 steals, and Millersville forced 17 Cheyney turnovers in the second half.
It was a steal and free throws from Newman that jump-started a 14-4 Millersville run that cut the Cheyney advantage to 44-34 with 8:23 to go. The Marauders continued to reel in Cheyney and got within four at 1:57 on a Stroman lay-up.
That's when the Millersville comeback ran out of steam, though. Trailing 59-55 with 1:12 to go, Millersville missed six of its last seven shots while Cheyney buoyed the lead with 10-straight makes from the line.
Millersville held Cheyney to 30.4 percent shooting from the field in the second, but the Wolves hit 19-of-25 free throws in the period and 22-of-29 in the game.
The Marauders travel to Mansfield Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
