Box Score
Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville field hockey team improved upon its best start in 11 years with a 2-1 upset victory over No. 9-ranked Mansfield Sunday at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
The win over Mansfield gave Millersville (4-2) its second over a top-10 opponent this season and its third in the last seven games dating back to 2008.
The Marauders dominated the game statistically, out-shooting the Mountaineers 23-10 and holding a 17-12 edge in penalty corners. But they needed a late second half goal and a defensive stand to pull off the victory.
Just over halfway through the second period with the score knotted 1-1, Millersville coach
Shelly Behrens called a timeout to rally her team after three straight shots in a 30-second span had been saved by Mansfield's Jamie Twist. Immediately after the timeout,
Emily Woodland broke free down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to senior
Kristie Testa who quickly rifled the game-winning shot past Twist.
Mansfield, however, refused to go away. With under a minute left, Mansfield took possession and drew a penalty corner as time ticked off the clock. Mansfield's first two attempts came up empty but it managed to force another corner each time. On the third corner, Brittany Kostishion's shot from just outside the circle went wide, sealing the win for the Marauders.
Millersville's first goal came from freshman
Melissa McCarthy at the 10:54 mark of the first half when she deflected a
Krista Bupp shot into the cage. Mansfield's lone score was punched in by Alycia Pici at 28:18 in the first half.
The Marauders' defense and goalkeeping continued its stellar play. Since surrendering three goals to No. 2 UMass Lowell in the season opener, the Marauders have allowed just three goals in five games. Millersville's sophomore goalkeeper
Sara Dickinson made all four of her saves in the first half.
Millersville takes on another top-10 opponent on Sept. 19 when it travels to Shippensburg.
