Lowell, Mass.— The Millersville field hockey team dropped its season-opener with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Cushing Field in Lowell.
Freshman Emily Painten set the pace for the River Hawks (1-0), scoring her first career goal in the 27th minute of the first half. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the home team as the teams headed to halftime.
UMass Lowell opened up some breathing room in the second half, scoring two goals in a span of 5:08. First, Jaci Moulton took a Kayla LeSage pass and knocked it home at 50:14 to give the River Hawks a 2-0 lead. Teammate Sammy Macy, who recorded a game-high nine shots (six on goal), then scored an unassisted goal at 55:22 to make it 3-0.
All four of the Marauders (0-1) shots on goal were turned aside by UMass Lowell goalkeeper Amy Carbon. Sophomore
Sara Dickinson made 11 saves in defeat for Millersville at the other end.
The Marauders return to action in the Northeast tomorrow, taking on Bentley in another non-conference matchup at 2 p.m.
