Lock Haven, Pa. - Coming off a six-win campaign in 2008, the Millersville women's soccer team was picked to finish sixth in the PSAC Eastern Division in Monday's preseason coaches' poll.
The Marauders return 10 key players from last season's team that went 6-10-3. The record, however, doesn't tell the entire story. The team started 4-2 and finished 2-2-2. Six of the team's losses were by just one goal.
Picked atop the PSAC East were Bloomsburg and West Chester. Both teams received two first place votes. Shippensburg also picked up two first place votes but was ranked third. Kutztown was picked fourth and despite picking up one first place vote, East Stroudsburg was picked fifth. Mansfield was selected seventh behind Millersville.
In the PSAC West, Slippery Rock was picked as the preseason favorite. Defening PSAC Champions Mercyhurst received more first place votes with five but was placed at No. 2. Gannon was picked third and was followed by Indiana (Pa.), California (Pa.), Edinboro, Lock Haven and Clarion.
Millersville will be led by junior Olivia Taylor and senior Sarah Cameron. The pair forms the club's top offensive weapons and will also provide leadership. Taylor is a two-time All-PSAC East selection and led the team in assists with five last year. Cameron scored a career-high four goals last year and is primed for a big season.
The Marauders' season opens on Aug. 27 at 4:30 p.m. at Philadelphia.
