Kutztown, Pa. - The Millersville men's tennis faced a tough test Wednesday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional in top-seeded Kutztown. The Golden Bears lived up to their seeding and ended Millersville's season by a 5-0 score.
The Marauders were one of eight teams to earn a berth into the regional, and one of just five teams to earn an at-large bid. Kutztown, however, was the defending PSAC Champs. Millersville's concluded its season with an 11-9 mark but lost five in a row down the stretch including three in a row during the postseason.
Kutztown took No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in convincing fashion, but Millersville's top team of Drew Slocum and Andrew Sorgi put up a fight. They battled Rubens Vianna and Kaushik Das, but fell by a 9-7 score.
In singles action, Santiago Baquerizo dispatched Donald Swantko 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Lukas Labitsch topped Sorgi, sealing the match for Kutztown. The other three matches were left unfinished. Slocum, though, won the first set of his match against Das 6-4 and was winning the second set 1-0. Erik Wright, playing at No. 6 singles, also won his first set 6-2.
In two seasons as Millersville's head coach, Shair Bucklin-Webber has led the team to two postseason appearances and 24 victories.
