Softball Splits Doubleheader, Wins Season Finale

Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2

Millersville, Pa. — The Millersville softball team struggled with the bats in game one, but sent its seniors out with a win in game two as it split a doubleheader, falling 1-0 and winning 8-4, against non-conference foe Shepherd to wrap up the 2009 season on Tuesday afternoon.

The Marauders (24-25) and Rams (20-17) engaged in a scoreless affair throughout the first four innings of game one. Brittany Peterson paced MU, retiring 10 of the first 13 batters she faced. Shepherd would get on the board in the fifth though, using a single from Nichole Pitcock to start the inning, and a 2-out RBI triple from Cammie Orlandi to grab a 1-0 lead.

Peterson (7-9) would cruise through the next two innings, but Millersville failed to dent Rams' starter Tricia Bettura. Bettura (8-6) threw a complete game, 4-hit shutout to end the Marauders' hopes of a .500 season. Bettura struck out five and stymied Millersville batters all afternoon.

Peterson also went the distance, but suffered the tough-luck loss. The rookie right-hander recorded two strikeouts in the game. Shaina Briel, Kelly Fitzgerald, Trisha Johnson, and Ally Homa each picked up a hit in the contest, while Briel stole her 11th base of the season.

Despite the game one setback, the Marauders showed resiliency in winning their last game of the season in game two. The MU bats may have been relatively quiet in game one, but such was not the case in game two, as the Black and Gold scored seven runs in the first three innings.

MU sandwiched a run in the second between 3-run first and third innings to break open a comfortable lead. Senior Janelle Mrakovich, playing in her last game as a Marauder, opened the scoring with a 2-RBI double that plated Casey Coker and Briel. Fitzgerald would score MU's leading hitter on a sac fly to make it 3-0.

A Homa single brought home Amy Kossyk to extend the lead to 4-0 in the second. Jill Golomboski got into the RBI-party in the third with a single that scored Mrakovich and Homa struck again, this time with a 2-RBI double to make it 7-0.

Millersville would tack on a run in the fifth, as Kossyk hit her fifth home run of the season. The long ball tied her for the team lead with Briel.

That was more than enough run support for Emily Flieger, who pitched solidly in her final outing as a Marauder. Flieger (6-1) pitched a complete game to end her career and allowed four runs on the afternoon, while striking out one.

Tuesday's games marked the end of four seniors' collegiate softball careers. Shaina Briel, Emily Flieger, Trisha Johnson, and Janelle Mrakovich were all key contributors to Marauder wins over the past handful of seasons and each were on the field at the completion of their final game.
