Game 2
East Stroudsburg, Pa. — The Millersville softball team had two middle-inning leads on Tuesday afternoon, but could hold neither of them in dropping a doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 5-3 at East Stroudsburg.
The Marauders (18-17, 1-7) got behind early in game one, as ESU's (14-11, 3-5) Brittany Racek led off the game with a triple and scored on an error. The Warriors made it 2-0 on an RBI single by Kara Darcey.
Millersville rallied with three runs of its own in the top of the sixth to grab a 3-2 lead. Freshman
Sam Jackson delivered a 2-run double and fellow rookie
Ally Homa followed with a sacrifice fly to give the visitors their first lead of the day.
ESU, however, grabbed the win with a two-spot in its last at bats. After the Warriors got a pair of singles against MU starter
Courtney Eckman to start the inning,
Brittany Peterson (6-5) came on in relief. Brittany Zanzalari would greet her with an RBI single to deadlock the game at three. The Marauders would get one out, but Amanda Dice's walk-off single gave the homestanding Warriors a 4-3 triumph.
The Black and Gold pushed a run across in the first and scored twice more in the fourth to claim a 3-0 lead in game two. Homa tripled and was brought home by an RBI groundout from
Casey Coker in the top half of the first frame. Homa continued her impressive day with a 2-RBI single in the fourth. The hit plated
Lindsay Hosier and Jackson and gave Homa three RBIs in the two games combined.
Late inning scoring would once again benefit ESU, however. With two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, the Warriors grabbed a 5-3 lead. Racek doubled in both runs in the fifth and Darcy and Dice were key contributors in the sixth inning spurt, as the same cast of characters came back to haunt the Marauders in game two.
Peterson (6-6) went the distance, but suffered the loss for MU. She allowed five runs (only two earned) and struck out two. The Marauders were hurt by errors in both games, making two in game one and three in the back half of the doubleheader.
Millersville continued its PSAC East slump and has now lost 7-of-8 in conference play. The team will look to right the ship, but the schedule doesn't get any easier, as defending PSAC East Champion Kutztown visits the Millersville University Softball Field for a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
