Kline Powers Marauders to Sweep of IUP

Game 1
Game 2

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville baseball red-shirt sophomore Derek Kline totaled six hits and drove in three runs as the Marauders swept a PSAC crossover doubleheader from visiting Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon.

Kline went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs in the 11-2 game one victory, and in game two, his third hit and only RBI was the biggest of the game. With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh, Kline singled past the shortstop, driving in the winning run and lifting the Marauders to a 5-4 win.

The sweep boosted Millersville's winning streak to a season-high five games and also pushed it to 18-15 overall, marking the first time the program has been three games over .500 since March 23, 2004.

While Kline led the way with three hits--two of which were doubles--in the opener, he was hardly the only Marauder contributing at the plate. The team pounded out 15 hits, including seven extra base hits, giving starter Kyle Belanchik (3-2) plenty of run support.

Miles Gallagher drove in Kline with an RBI single in the first to give Millersville the early edge. The Marauders scored another in the third on an RBI single from Kline. Indiana knotted the contest at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but Millersville erupted for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning.

Scott Slembecker got things started with a two-run home run, freshman Adam Boyd tripled in a pair of runs, Kline ripped a run-scoring double and Cody Wile scored Kline on a sacrifice fly.

The Marauders, however, were not finished. They added three more in the sixth on RBIs from Wile, Slembecker and Michael DeSanto.

Seven different Marauders totaled at least one hit in the game. Kline, Gallagher and DeSanto each totaled three hits. Ryan McCormick went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Slembecker went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a team high three runs.

Belanchik cruised through 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Keith Bires worked 1.2 shutout innings, and Michael Mesveskas closed the door in the seventh.

Game two proved to be a more closely played affair. IUP jumped on starter David Busch in the first, scoring two runs and knocking him out of the game after two-thirds of an inning. The Marauders got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but IUP boosted its lead to 3-1 in the third.

Millersville snatched the lead right back, though, when McCormick led off the third with his third homer of the season, and Andrew Dochterman pushed Millersville in front 4-3 on a two-run blast to right field.

IUP retied the game in the fourth and it stood at 4-4 until the bottom of the seventh. McCormick set the table after being plunked by a pitch and moved up by stealing second and reached third on a wild pitch. IUP elected to intentionally walk Boyd to set up the double play, but Kline took advantage by driving in McCormick for the win.

Bires (3-0) picked up the win after pitching one-third of an inning and escaping a jam in the top of the seventh. Ryan Stauffer pitched solidly in relief as well, working 3.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits and striking out three.

The Marauders return to the field Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they host Wilmington for a nine inning contest. The game can be heard on MSBN.
