Marauders Hang Tough, But Drop Pair to No. 12 Kutztown

Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2

Kutztown, Pa. — Make no mistake about it, this Millersville softball team doesn't play for moral victories. The relatively young Marauders, however, learned something about themselves Wednesday afternoon: They can play with the class of the PSAC East. Millersville just couldn't get over the hump on this day, falling by scores of 3-2 and 3-0 to the defending PSAC East Champion Kutztown Golden Bears at North Campus Field.

The Marauders (17-12, 0-2 PSAC East) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, scoring runs on a passed ball and a Kelly Fitzgerald sacrifice fly in the top of the first. It marked the 19th RBI of the season for the freshman from Upper Darby, who unfortunately saw her 8-game hitting streak snapped.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the 12th-ranked Golden Bears (26-6, 2-0 PSAC East) got a solo home run from Heather Hannum. KU would follow that up in the fifth with Steph Denlinger's 68th career home run. Denlinger, the reigning PSAC East Player of the Week and Division II's all-time home run leader, put her team up 3-2 with the round-tripper.

Brittany Peterson (6-2) took the loss for MU, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings. The freshman also struck out three. Katlin Arbogast got the win, allowing just one earned run and striking out six while throwing a complete game. Arbogast, the reigning PSAC East Pitcher of the Week, improved to 13-3 on the season.

In game two, Millersville's bats struggled to find anything against Arbogast and Mary Hoch. The Marauders managed five hits, but left seven runners stranded on the base paths.  KU, meanwhile, got a run in the second and two in the fifth to build a 3-0 edge.

Casey Coker and Sam Jackson each went 2-of-3, as they combined to pick up four of the Marauders five hits. Courtney Eckman (6-4) threw her fifth complete game of the season, but suffered the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out three. Hoch (7-1) was credited with the win, striking out seven MU batters over five innings.

Millersville returns home Friday afternoon to take on Shippensburg in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
