Philadelphia, Pa. -- The Millersville men's tennis team claimed its latest victim Saturday, as it soundly defeated Chestnut Hill College 7-2, extending its winning streak to five, its spring record to 5-1 and its team record to 6-3.
After going 1-2 in the fall and dropping their first spring outing on March 1, the Marauders regrouped and have torn up the opposition on the courts ever since, winning 38-of-45 singles and doubles matches and winning five straight team matches -- all on the road.
Drew Slocum, who holds Millersville's No. 1 spot, easily defeated Chestnut Hill's Julius Twyman 6-2, 6-0 in straight sets Saturday. Don Swantko, meanwhile, had a tougher first set, going to a 7-4 tie-breaker, but he had no problems in the second set, digging out the win 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 over Chestnut Hill's Adrian Avena.
Andrew Sorgi lost the only singles match of the day for the Marauders, but his opponent, Steve Hlava, didn't have an easy go of it, dropping the first set to Sorgi and having to take the Marauder deep into the third set before ultimately getting the win. Sorgi lost 6-2, 4-6, 9-11.
The loss was followed by strong performances by Marauders Mark Treires, Dusty Speicher and Henry Ben, however, and Millersville went up over the Griffins 5-1 in singles.
The first doubles match saw Slocum and Sorgi easily beat Twyman and Hlava 8-2, but the team of Speicher and Treires had a more difficult time of it, losing to Carson Richter and Avena 5-8.
The Marauders ended the day and the match on a high note, as Swantko and Ben sailed to a clean 8-0 victory over the Griffin team of Kenny Stubblefield and Albert Council.
Millersville's first home matches of 2009 will be held on Friday, as the team hosts University of the District of Columbia at 3 p.m. on the McComsey Tennis Courts.
