Millersville, Pa. — In both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against Georgian Court, the Millersville softball team was knocking on the door of victory. In both games the Marauders came away empty handed, as the visiting Lions handed them losses of 1-0 and 5-4 at the Millersville University Softball Field.
The Marauders (5-9) were afforded no easy task on Wednesday, having to face Georgian Court's Diana Sansevera in both games. Sansevera entered the contests with 69 strikeouts in just 9 appearances. She proved to be a tough customer early on, stifling Millersville's hitters.
The Lions (9-3) broke the scoring drought in the top of the fourth.
Courtney Eckman recorded the first two outs, but Jess Komiskey, who had reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and eventually scored on a single by Kasey Jo Burnish. It was the only run support Sansevera would need in game one.
Sansevera was outstanding, no-hitting the Marauders for 5.1 innings before
Shaina Briel singled. The Black and Gold had their best chance to get a run in the sixth. Briel's single moved
Lindsay Hosier to second with one down. The Marauders couldn't capitalize though, as
Casey Coker struck out and
Janelle Mrakovich grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Sansevera took the win (5-1), allowing just the Briel single over seven innings. The sophomore walked four and struck out nine in earning the win. Eckman had an outstanding performance for the Marauders, despite being credited with the loss. Eckman (1-4) also threw a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out one, while not allowing a walk.
Millersville experienced a bit more success against Sansevera in game two. After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second, the Marauders answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the frame.
Trisha Johnson and
Ally Homa walked and Hosier knocked a Sansevera offering into the outfield, scoring Johnson. Briel followed suit with an RBI single of her own that plated Homa and tied the game at two.
The two squads struggled to find offense over the next three innings, as Sansevera and Millersville's
Brittany Peterson, on in relief, controlled the bats with their arms.
The Marauders struck again in the bottom of the sixth, getting to Sansevera for two runs and garnering a 4-2 lead.
Amy Kossyk struck out to lead off the inning, but reached on a passed ball. Kossyk advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Johnson to give the Marauders the edge. Homa's sacrifice fly a few batters later gave Millersville an insurance run.
Unfortunately for the Marauders, they needed a little bit more insurance on this day. Stephanie Cuevas stepped up with two runners aboard in the top half of the seventh and two outs. Cuevas sent Peterson's offering over the fence in left for her first home run of the season and gave the Lions a 5-4 lead.
Millersville got two runners on base in its last at-bats, but once again failed to convert them into any runs. Sansevera took her second win of the day (6-1), throwing another complete game while allowing three earned runs on five hits and striking out 10. Peterson (1-1) took the loss, giving up the three runs in 4.2 innings and striking out one.
The Marauders will try to put the disappointment of Wednesday's games behind them in a hurry, as they are back on the field Thursday afternoon at Holy Family. The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
