Marauders Turn Up the Pressure, Emerge With Win at USP

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. —
Trailing at halftime for the first time this season, the Millersville women's basketball team used its full court press to frustrate the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and rally for a 69-59 victory at Morgan Arena on Monday evening.

The Marauders (3-0) did themselves no favors by shooting just 34.8-percent from the floor. Sciences (0-2) used a healthy serving of Caitlin Shaw and Alyssa Hamm to race out to a 33-31 lead after 20 minutes. Despite the poor shooting numbers, the Black and Gold remained close due to its ability to create turnovers and points off of those takeaways.

Coach Mary Fleig, sensing a need to get her team out of its offensive lull, turned to the press at the start of the second half. The Marauders responded, jumping in front early in the half and never looking back. Mashira Newman, the reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week, led the team in scoring for the third game in a row with 15 points. After starting slow, Newman was able to come on strong late, scoring 10 of her 15 in the second half.

Millersville finished +12 in the turnover game, but it wasn't the only factor that helped the Marauders stay unbeaten in their first road test of the season. Rebounds and second chance points were pivotal in the contest, as MU held a 42-32 advantage on the boards, which included 20 rebounds of the offensive variety.

Sophomore Gabrielle Styles picked up her play, with her 12 points and eight rebounds signifying her best performance of the season, to date. Jenna Craig and Newman also racked up eight rebounds apiece as the three shared a team-high in rebounds.

Raquel Green's presence was felt off the bench as she put forth a 13-point, 6-rebound effort. Millersville's free-throw struggles continued, as it shot just 19-32 at the line. The Marauders did, however, shoot 14-23 in the second half, as they outscored the Devils 38-26 in the stanza.

Shaw led USP with 20 points and eight rebounds. She made a living at the line, where she was 8-of-10. Hamm also finished in double figures for the home team with 14 points. The loss was the Devils' second straight against PSAC East opponents this season. USP fell to West Chester in its season opener.

Millersville is back at Pucillo Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Philadelphia University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
