Live Stats (Univ. Dist. Columbia/Lock Haven at Millersville)
THE WEEK AHEAD
• Millersville opens its 2009-10 season with a pair of weekend home games before traveling to Southeastern Pennsylvania to face the University of Sciences in Philadelphia in its first road contest on Monday night. MU has not opened a season away from Pucillo Gymnasium since 2003-04.
• The Marauders have started the season with a win in 16-of-19
Mary Fleig-coached openers. MU has won its last three openers, with its last season-opening loss coming at the hands of the College of St. Rose (81-75) in 2005-06. The program is 38-15 in openers dating back to the 1956-57 season.
• Millersville and UDC first squared off during the 1970-71 season, with the Marauders claiming a 58-49 victory in the inaugural matchup. The teams have split six games in the all-time series, with MU currently riding a two-game winning streak against the Firebirds.
• The Black and Gold and Lock Haven have opposed each other at least once in each of the last 18 seasons. Millersville holds a 27-20 edge in the all-time series.
Mary Fleig is 17-5 against her alma mater since taking over as the program's head coach prior to the 1991-92 season.
• The all-time series with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia is in its infancy. The Marauders have not dropped a game against the Devils in three previous meetings. Last season MU routed USP 67-45 on Nov. 24. Millersville has outscored USP 241-171 in the series, for an average winning margin of 23.3 points per game.
SCOUTING U. OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
• The University of the District of Columbia comes into Friday's game with a 1-1 record this season. The Firebirds dropped an 84-80 decision to Livingstone last Sunday, but rebounded to beat Lincoln (Pa.), 67-63, on Monday.
• Lillian McGill and Tiffany Church have been the go-to scorers early on for UDC. McGill led the team in scoring with 23 in its loss to Livingstone, while Church dropped 24 on Lincoln.
• McGill and Church are both juniors, but coming off of completely different 2008-09 seasons. McGill was the team's second leading scorer, averaging over 13 points per game. Church, meanwhile, played just one game a season ago.
• The Firebirds have seen a dramatic turnaround under fourth-year head coach Lester L. Butler, Jr. Last season UDC compiled a 24-5 record. The program won just 24 games combined from 2005-2007.
• Butler's squad earned an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament. The Firebirds ran into a stellar California (Pa.) team, falling to the Vulcans 73-55 in the first round of the Atlantic Regional.
• Sophomore Stacy Griffith is the only Firebird to pick up a double-double in the team's first two games. Griffith, a 6'1 forward/center, racked up 15 points and 12 rebounds in UDC's win over Lincoln last Monday.
SCOUTING LOCK HAVEN
• The Bald Eagles, under the direction of Millersville graduate Jennifer Smith, enter 2009-10 after a season of struggle in 2008-09. Lock Haven won just three games against 24 defeats a year ago, and was 0-16 in the always-tough PSAC West.
• One of LHU's more pressing issues last season was its defense. Lock Haven allowed a PSAC-worst 75.4 points per game. Additionally, the Bald Eagles had the conference's 13th-ranked scoring offense, putting up just under 63 points per game. The team's -12.7 scoring margin ranked last in the league.
• The Haven is off to a much better start in 2009-10, dominating Penn College 90-38 in its season-opener last Sunday.
• Senior guard Marisa Elliot scored a game-high 17 points in LHU's victory, while Kristen Kudrick had 13. The Bald Eagles placed four players in the double-figure scoring column. Four players also grabbed five rebounds or more in the contest.
• The success of Elliot and Kudrick in the opener may be a sign of things to come for LHU. Both players suffered season-ending injuries early on in 2008-09, contributing to the team's rough campaign last season.
• As far as newcomers go, LHU will rely heavily upon freshmen Tyeshia Carroll and Jaime Donovan. Carroll is expected to add quickness to the lineup, while Donovan, a long-range threat, will be looked upon to pick up some of the scoring vacated by Lauren Kelshaw, who averaged 14 ppg.
SCOUTING SCIENCES PHILADELPHIA
• The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia opened its season last Tuesday, falling on the road at West Chester, 75-62.
• Tuesday's game was the debut for first-year head coach Paul Stadelberger. Stadelberger was a long-time assistant at Philadelphia, but this is his first shot at a head coaching position.
• The Devils return nine-letter winners from 2008-09, including leading-scorer Erin Chesnavich (16.2 points per game).
• Caitlin Shaw, who started 15 games for USP last season, led the team with 16 points in its loss at West Chester. Chesnavich had 12, while her sister, Marissa, chipped in 11 points.
• On the heels of a 15-13 record a season ago, USP was picked to finish fifth in the South Division of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) in the conference's pre-season poll.
• Sciences is a veteran-laden squad comprised of eight upperclassmen. Of those eight, seven averaged over 20 minutes of playing time per game last season.
• The Devils also boast some height. The team has four players six feet or taller. The best of those is 6'1 senior, Erin Chesnavich, an All-CACC selection last year.
LOOKING BACK
• The last time Millersville took to the court was in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional on March 13. The Marauders fell, 59-49, in the first round to Charleston (W.Va.), ending a 23-7 season and the careers of
Gladine St. Julien and
Jenna Philo.
• MU held a halftime lead in the game and was in position to upset the WVIAC Champions, but the Golden Eagles outscored the Marauders by 11 (36-25) in the second half.
• Late game execution doomed the Marauders. They cut the deficit to six with 1:37 to go, as Charleston tried to help MU's comeback bid by struggling at the line. The Golden Eagles shot just 52-percent (9-of-17) at the charity stripe on the evening. Even with UC allowing them to get back in the game, the Marauders could not get over the proverbial hump. Millersville missed its final five shots and turned the ball over twice on its last seven possessions as the successful season came to a disappointing end.
• St. Julien's 20 points led the way, as she was 7-of-17 from the floor, including two 3-pointers. Philo had five points and a team-high four assists in her final collegiate game.
Jenna Craig's nine points and 10 rebounds left her one point shy of her 10th double-double of the season.
• There were a number of positives to take from the 2008-09 season, however. Millersville shared the PSAC East title with West Chester, marking the second year in a row that the Marauders have finished atop the conference. The 23 wins came within two of a program record and were the third most in a season in Millersville history.
Gladine St. Julien surpassed 1,000 points for her career and moved into third on the single season scoring list with 449 points. 'G' also jumped up to 14th on Millersville's all-time scoring list, finishing her career with 1,021 points.
LIFE OUTSIDE THE PSAC EAST
• Non-conference games have been good to the Black and Gold recently. MU was 12-4 outside the PSAC East a season ago. Against non-PSAC West opponents, the Marauders were 8-2.
• Millersville has compiled a 32-16 record against non-conference opponents since 2006-07.
• MU has only had a losing record in non-conference play once in the last seven seasons. In 2005-06, the Marauders were 7-10 outside of the PSAC East.
DOUBLING UP
• Senior
Jenna Craig has increased her double-double total in each of the three seasons she has been in the program. As a freshman, Craig picked up just one double-double. That number jumped to four as a sophomore and nine as a junior.
• Outside of Craig's 14 career double-doubles, members of the 2009-10 team account for just three more.
Raquel Green has twice registered a double-double in her career with the Black and Gold, while
Aiesha Bellamy notched her first career double-double last season against Kutztown on March 3.
PRE-SEASON PRAISE
• The Marauders were picked to finish second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division when the conference's coaches released their pre-season poll on Oct. 29.
• Millersville received three first place votes, the same amount as division-favorite, West Chester. Last season the Marauders and Golden Rams finished as regular season co-champions of the Eastern Division after compiling 11-3 records in PSAC East play.
• Craig, a 2008-09 All-PSAC East Second Team selection, was named to the 2009-10 PSAC East Preseason All-Conference Team.
GETTING OFFENSIVE
• Craig was a dominant rebounder at both ends of the floor last season, but her 100 offensive rebounds marked an impressive feat. She became the first Marauder to register triple-digit offensive boards in a season since Destinne Parker-Stewart and Kristy Garner both pulled down 104 in 2004-05.
'BELL' COMING ON STRONG
• Graduate guard,
Aiesha Bellamy, started to show her scoring prowess over the last several games of 2008-09. Bellamy was a double-figure scorer in five of the team's last seven games, with a high of 16 points coming against California (Pa.) on March 6 during that stretch.
HOME COOKING
• Since Millersville began playing its home games in Pucillo Gymnasium in 1982, the Marauders are an impressive 260-78 at home in 27 seasons. The team has never won less than seven games at Pucillo in a single season and has never had a losing record. Millersville has recorded three losses or fewer at home in 19 of 27 seasons at Pucillo, including a stretch of seven straight seasons from 1996 to 2002.
