Mansfield Edges No. 9 Marauders

Mansfield, Pa.- Despite firing 14 more shots on goal, the No. 9 Millersville field hockey was defeated 4-2 Sunday afternoon by Mansfield, which recorded its second win over a top 10 team in two days.

The Marauders' (6-6) offense tallied five of the first six shots before Mansfield (5-8) found the back of the cage 13 minutes into the contest.

Although Millersville out-shot the Mountaineers by a margin of 10-4, the squad went into halftime down 2-0 as Mansfield added its second goal just five minutes before the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Mansfield extended its lead 3-0. Millersville responded soon after as sophomore Emily Manwiller recorded her first goal of the season off an assist from junior Jessica Cave.

Senior Nicole Rayson notched an unassisted goal 10 minutes later, bringing the Marauders back into contention. Millersville tallied 23 shots in total compared to Mansfield's nine and held a 16-7 advantage in corner shots.

The Mountaineers scored the final goal of the game with less than nine minutes to play. Sophomore goal keeper Sara Dickinson tallied two saves on the day.

Millersville hosts PSAC East foe East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the second match-up of the season between the clubs. The game is slated for 4 p.m.
