Millersville, Pa. - The No. 9 Millersville field hockey team produced its most dominating offensive performance in 11 years and made a statement toward the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings with a 9-0 rout of visiting Seton Hill Saturday.
The Marauders (6-5), despite being ranked ninth in the NFCA Division II Coaches' Poll was unranked in the first NCAA Regional Poll released earlier this week. Seton Hill (5-6), however, was seventh. Millersville made its case on the field by out-shooting Seton Hill 32-7 and holding a 22-4 edge in corners.
The nine goals scored were the most by a Millersville team since 1998 when the Marauders topped Mercyhurst by the same 9-0 score.
Seven different Marauders scored at least one goal and seven registered at least one assist. Freshman
Brittany Anderson, playing in her first game as a Marauder, scored twice and scored two goals to lead the offensive charge. Senior
Kristie Testa scored twice to give her a team-best six on the season.
Emily Woodland added a career-high three assists.
It took Millersville more than 27 minutes to get on the board, though. Woodland found Testa at 27:34, opening the floodgates. Just under five minutes later, Woodland assisted freshman
Melissa McCarthy for her third goal of the season, giving the Marauders a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Freshman
Lauri Blessing opened the second half scoring eight minutes in on an assist from senior
Meredith Dolinger. Just over three minutes later,
Paige Morrison scored her first of the season on a
Alexia Lampo's first of two assists. Testa scored against at the 55:25 mark, and Millersville scored four more times in the final eight minutes.
Anderson had a hand in four of the final five goals.
Ashley Weber scored her third of the season, and junior
Jessica Cave tallied her first strike of the season for Millersville's final goal.
Goalkeeper
Sara Dickinson stopped all three shots fired her way during her 43 minutes of action.
Keily Doehring made four saves over the final 26:50 to complete Millersville's third shutout of the season.
The Marauders outscored Seton Hill by a 14-1 margin in two meetings this season, and has scored 13 goals in the last two games after scoring just one in the previous three.
Millersville returns to action Sunday afternoon at Mansfield. Game time is 1 p.m.
