Erie, Pa. – The eighth-ranked Millersville field hockey team rallied to claim a 3-2 victory against No. 8 Mercyhurst in PSAC crossover action Sunday afternoon in Erie.
Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Marauders (9-8) recorded three second-half goals to stun the Lakers (8-6) in a battle of two squads currently tied for the No. 8 ranking in Division II. Senior
Meredith Dolinger picked up her first goal of the season to get Millersville on the scorebord.
Emily Woodland scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at two, before freshman
Melissa McCarthy finished off the comeback. All three Marauder goals came in a span of 10 minutes and all came with under 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
Millersville took the first eight shots of the game, including three penalty corners, but came up empty. Megan Richards put Mercyhurst ahead 12:01 into the game.
Sara Dickinson stopped the initial penalty corner, but Richards was there to collect the game's first goal soon after.
Despite repeated offensive pressure by Millersville, Laker goalkeeper Ashley Wiskup made five saves. Serena Slattery found the back of the cage at the 23 minute mark to extend the Mercyhurst lead to 2-0 going into halftime.
The second half remained scoreless until Dolinger scored off a pass from senior
Krista Bupp. Millersville, on the heels of a momentum swing, controlled play for the next five minutes, with Woodland then tying the game.
After three unsuccessful corner shots, McCarthy scored the game-winner, lifting the Marauders to a hard earned 3-2 victory. Dickinson recorded four saves on the day.
Millersville looks for its third straight win on Tuesday, Oct. 20 when it travels to conference rival Kutztown. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
