Second Half Surge Sends Marauders Past Cheyney

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. —
Senior Gladine St. Julien and junior Jenna Craig spearheaded a 13-point second half comeback, as the Millersville women's basketball team moved above .500 in conference play for the first time this season with a 73-61 victory over Cheyney at Pucillo Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Marauders (14-4, 3-2 PSAC East) got out of the gate quickly behind eight points from junior Ashley Moyer and four from St. Julien, as they built a 16-9 lead at the 7:03 mark. Millersville had its biggest lead of the half at 20-12 with 10:58 remaining, following back-to-back layups by Emily Balogh. But Cheyney (8-6, 3-2 PSAC East) answered in a big way, as the Wolves dominated the final 10 minutes of the first half, outscoring the Black and Gold 29-12 and taking a 41-32 lead to the break. Lutfiyya Muhammad scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the run and Angel Henderson, who came into Wednesday's game averaging just 3.8 points per game, scored a season-high 10 points in the half.

Cheyney built its lead to 13 early in the second half on a jumper by leading-scorer Angel Stephens. The Marauders were staring a 45-32 deficit in the face with 18:49 to play, but the ladies would start to turn the tide. Craig, Moyer, St. Julien, and Dominique Stroman all played a key role in a 13-0 Millersville run that tied the game at 45 with 13:51 to go. Cheyney took another quick blow when Stephens fouled out with 11:45 remaining.

The two teams would trade the lead three times in the next 7:30. The Wolves took a 61-58 lead on Shanira Blake's layup with 5:40 to go, but that would be the last time Cheyney would find the bucket. The same cast of characters that led the 13-0 run earlier in the half, were the same ones that led Millersville's final 15-0 run and helped the Marauders secure the victory.

The win marked Millersville's 31st consecutive triumph over Cheyney, dating back to the 1990-91 season. St. Julien finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Craig collected her second double-double in as many games by scoring 12 points and collecting 13 boards. Craig has now finished with 13 rebounds in each of her last three games. The Marauders finished with five players in double-figures, as Moyer dropped in 13, while Aiesha Bellamy and Balogh finished with 10 apiece. Senior guard Jenna Philo pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists, but for the first time in 60 games, she did not score.

Millersville will be back in action Saturday when it hosts Mansfield at Pucillo Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can listen live on MSBN.
