Slippery Rock, Pa. - Using a staunch defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack, the Millersville men's basketball team locked up Slippery Rock and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's top scoring offense Saturday for a 64-57 victory.
The Marauders (6-6) entered Saturday ranked last in the league in scoring defens while Slippery Rock (8-4) had been lighting up opponents to the tune of 90.1 points per game. It was Millersville, however, that imposed its will, holding The Rock to 36.7 shooting from the field and forcing 22 turnovers.
It was Millersville's best defensive effort since holding Penn State Abington to just 51 points in the season opener on Nov. 15, and also gave the team back-to-back wins for the first time since starting the year 2-0.
Senior Makal Stibbins led four Marauders in double figures with 17 points and six rebounds. Jason Blake chipped in 14 points, two steals and a team-high three assists. Reggie Bates tacked on 13 points, five boards and three steals, and freshman Cullen Murray-Kemp scored a career-high 10 points on using 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range.
Murray-Kemp and Bates' dead-eye shooting from long range sparked the Marauders early. In the first half, the freshman hit 2-of-2 off the bench, and Bates drilled 3-of-5 including two in the first eight minutes of action. His third three at the half came at the 6:25 mark and snapped a 20-20 tie.
Murray-Kemp hit both of his first half treys in the final minute including a buzzer-beater that gave Millersville a 35-28 lead at the break.
Slippery Rock slashed the lead down to 35-33 just 46 seconds into the second, but Marauders went to Stibbins and he answered The Rock by scoring seven points in the next four offensive possessions. Another 3-pointer from Murray-Kemp and a lay-up from Blake at 14:11 gave Millersville a 51-38 advantage.
A spirited Slippery Rock rally closed the gap to 59-57 with just over four minutes left. But the Marauder defense put on the clamps and held Slippery Rock scoreless over the final 2:51.
Millersville notched the win despite being out-rebounded 50-32 and shooting just 6-of-12 from the free throw line. The defense was key in forcing the PSAC's assist leader, Kyle Camper, into 10 turnovers and just five assists.
Millersville head coach Fred Thompson improved to 9-0 all-time against Slippery Rock.
The Marauders face a stiff challenge Sunday when they travel to Erie, Pa. to face PSAC newcomer and the No. 21 team in Division II, Mercyhurst. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. The broadcast can be heard on MSBN.
