
Speicher Advances to Quarterfinals at ITA Atlantic Regional

Bloomsburg, Pa. - After one day of action at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Bloomsburg, Pa., the Millersville men's tennis team's hopes for a championship rested on Dusty Speicher, as he was the lone Marauder to advance past the first round Saturday.
Playing in the “B” draw, #Speicher# took his first round match against Mercyhurst's Mike Aronson, 8-4. He then moved into the quarterfinals with a convincing 8-1 victory over Ryan Baxter of East Stroudsburg.
Speicher and teammate Mark Treires also advanced into the quarterfinals of the “B” doubles. After receiving a bye in the opening round, the tandem topped a doubles team from East Stroudsburg, 8-3. Speicher and Treires will face a squad from Bloomsburg Sunday.
The rest of the Marauders did not fair as well. In the “A” singles draw, Donald Swantko fell to Mercyhurst's Mijo Crotic 6-4, 6-2 in the opener. Drew Slocum was downed by West Virginia Wesleyan's Alvaro Ochoa 6-2, 6-1, and Marty Matkowski fell to Bloomsburg's Nando Perez 6-1, 6-0.
Treires fell 8-0 to West Virginia Wesleyan's Luis Cruz. Cruz went on to the quarterfinals. Henry Ben, seeing his first action of the season was ousted 8-1 by Bloomsburg's Mark Schroeder, who also advanced to the round of eight.
Millersville's top team of Slocum and Andrew Sorgi was edged in the first round of the “A” doubles draw by Bloomsburg's No. 1 team, 9-7. In “B” doubles action, Marty O'Hora and #Tyler Lied#, playing in their first match as a team, fell 9-8 (7-4) to East Stroudsburg. Swantko and Corbin Holland were bounced by Mercyhurst, 8-1.
