A three-time PSAC wrestling champion at Millersville in 1957-58 (167 lb.), 1960-61 (157 pounds) and 1961-62 (157 lb.), Dr. Walter E. Kottmeyer compiled an impressive 40-1-2 dual meet record during his four-year Marauder mat career.
In 1962, Dr. Kottmeyer captured the 157-pound title at the NAIA Championships and received All-America status. He also earned 4-I mat crowns in 1958 and 1962, and placed fourth in 1961.
A two-year captain, Dr. Kottmeyer received the Theodore H. Rupp Award (outstanding MU grappler) in 1961 and 1962.
Thirty years after his graduation (bachelor's of science degree in biological science), Dr. Kottmeyer was inducted into the PIAA District 3 Hall of Fame.
Dr. Kottmeyer served the Downingtown Area School District with distinction for more than a quarter-century until his retirement this past spring. For eight years (1994-02), he was principal at Downingtown Area Senior High School. The district's new $4 million football stadium that opened this summer was named in his honor, as was the weight room at Downingtown West High School.
He has received numerous honors, including the Service Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Secondary School Principals and the Chester County Boy Scout Council Service Award. He also master's degree from Trenton State and a Ed.D., from Nova University.
Involved extensively in the community, Dr. Kottmeyer’s service includes: executive board member and past president, Pennsylvania Association of Pennsylvania School Principals; scholarship committee member, National Association of Secondary School Principals; president, Ches-Mont League; past president, Lionville Lions Club; member, Chester County Council Boy Scouts Board of Review; past chair, Boy Scout Troop Committee; elder and past board of trustees chair, Central Presbyterian Church; former coach, Lionville Youth Association; toy chairman, Downingtown Christmas Committee; and set construction director for the Downingtown High School Music Theatre.
