Induction Speech
Mike McFetridge quickly earned the moniker “Mr. Mc-Go-To” for his ability to make big catches, and the wide receiver, who won the 1998 PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year award, established himself as the most productive pass catcher in school history at the time of his graduation.
After catching two passes as a freshman, the 5-10 McFetridge stepped into the position vacated by All-American Kevin Cannon and not only became an All-American but eclipsed Cannon’s records. By the end of the 1998 season, McFetridge owned school records with 27 touchdowns, 2,783 receiving yards and 222 receptions, which shattered the previous record by 58. He remains the only player in school history with at least 70 catches in three different seasons, and he owns three of the top 10 single season performances in receiving yards including one of just five 1,000 yard seasons.
McFetridge is still only one of two Marauders be named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named All-PSAC East First Team twice and to the second team once. Considered among the best receivers in Division II, he was voted All-America by the AFCA, Daktronics and Associated Press following his 1998 senior season and was a Don Hansen’s Football Gazette Honorable Mention selection in 1997.
McFetridge entered his sophomore season of 1996 as an unknown commodity but caught 72 passes for 860 yards and eight touchdowns, eclipsing the 100-yard mark in six games. He repeated his performance the following season with 70 catches, 770 and six more touchdown catches. McFetridge’s senior season of 1998, in which the Marauders went 8-2 overall and 6-0 in the PSAC East, placed him as the Marauders’ most elite pass catcher. He tied a school record with 77 catches and set new marks in yards (1,131) and touchdowns (13). His 13 touchdowns still stand as a record. His player of the year and All-America recognition landed him a spot in the 1999 Snow Bowl All-Star Game. He also received the Elwood J. Finley Award as Millersville University’s male athlete of the year.
Following his Millersville playing career, McFetridge received a tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles and also signed a contract to be eligible for the XFL Draft. McFetridge graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminology in 1999, and also earned a master’s degree in health and physical education from East Stroudsburg in 2005. He and his wife of eight years, Angela, have one son, Wyatt.
