In 1990, outfielder Mike VanGavree enjoyed a season the likes of which were never attained before—in more than a century of Millersville baseball.
VanGavree led the nation (all three NCAA divisions) in batting average at .507 (68 hits in 134 at-bats). During that historic ’90 season, the all-star outfielder from Hummelstown, Pa., hit safely in a club-record 23 consecutive games.
In addition, at his time of graduation, VanGavree established season records for runs (44), extra base hits (25), RBI (45), doubles (16), triples (5), home runs (8), and slugging percentage (.806). And, in career categories, he was first in extra base hits (57), RBI (119), doubles (33), triples (8), total bases (258), batting average (.405), slugging percentage (.648, still atop the ‘Ville chart), and times hit by pitch (9).
Named as an NCAA Division II All-American following his phenomenal senior season, VanGavree also earned NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic and ECAC Division II honors and was named PSAC Player of the Year. He was selected as the Elwood J. Finley Award winner (outstanding MU senior male athlete). He was a three-time all-region and all-state selection (1988-90) and two-year team captain (1989-90).
In his three-year MU career, VanGavree helped pace the Marauder diamondmen to the 1988 ECAC Division II championship, followed a year later by a berth in the PSAC tournament.
As a Marauder, he was on the winning side 69 times with three consecutive 20-victory campaigns.
In his current vocation, VanGavree is a vice president for Professional Insurance Services of Lemoyne, Pa. He is a member of the Mental Health Association (Capitol Region) and is a baseball consultant for youth. VanGavree is a member of American Society of Safety Engineers of Central Pennsylvania.
