Hall of Fame
Ranking among the greatest hitters in Millersville history, Jay Johnson was a key offensive performer from 1974-77, helping the Marauders to a pair of PSAC Championships under the direction of Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame coach Gene Wise.
Â
Johnson posted a career batting of .398, a tally that ranks fourth in Millersville history to this day. Johnson led the 1974 championship team in RBIs, led the team in doubles in 1975 and 1977 and led the 1976 club in triples. Playing alongside fellow hall of famer Bob Rossi, Johnson led the Marauders in hitting as a junior and senior. He hit .393 in 1976, and in 1977, he set a school record with a .459 batting average—a record that stood until 1990. It still ranks second all-time.
Â
Johnson’s offense landed him All-PSAC East First Team honors three times, including a unanimous selection following his senior season. Johnson, Rossi, former MLB Draft pick Chris Murphy and Chas McCormick, a current member of the Houston Astros’ organization, are the only players in program history to be a three-time first team selection.
Â
Johnson graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
