Hubert Peters competed as a two-way back for Millersville State Teachers College during the "glory years" of the Ivan "Poss" Stehman coaching era. He was a member of the 1940 undefeated and untied MSTC football team (7-0 record).

Peters served his country in World War II after the 1941-42 academic year when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. After the war, he returned to Millersville to earn his degree and complete his athletics career.

A two-time All-Pennsylvania State Teachers College selection (1946 and 1947) on the gridiron, Peters also served as team captain his junior and senior years.

In addition, Peters earned three varsity letters each in basketball and baseball wearing the Black and Gold. He was also president of the Varsity "C" Club.

Peters served 34 years as an educator and coach at Donegal High School. There, he taught mathematics, physical education and industrial arts and he also served as assistant principal. He was Donegal's first varsity football coach (7 years' service) and also guided its basketball (7 years) and baseball (10 years) squads. Peters retired in 1980.

Prior to his posts at Donegal, Peters was a mathematics, physical education and health teacher at Marietta High School, where he also coached varsity basketball and baseball.

A lifelong resident of his native hometown of Columbia, Pa., Peters was director of the Columbia Area Youth Parks and Recreation Association for 28 years (1948-76) and also founded the Columbia Community Center for Youths. During his tenure, five community playgrounds were built. In 1985, a Lancaster Newspapers story described "Hubie" as "Mr. Recreation."

For his dedication and commitment, Peters received Man of the Year honors from The Columbia Boys and Girls Club and the Jimmy Sheckard Community Service Award. He also received the borough's Community Action Program recognition award in 1968.

Peters was inducted into the Susquehanna Valley chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. A decade later, he received the Millersville Football Alumni Award.

"Hubie" was a distinguished lifetime member of the following organizations: Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Benevolent Moose, BPOE Elks, and Mason.

Mr. Peters passed away June 20, 1998 at the age of 79. He and his wife, Lou (deceased) were the parents of Ben, Huberta "Cookie" and Richard (deceased).
