In an era when Millersville wrestling stood among the elite programs and routinely finished near the top of the team standings at the NCAA Championships, Henry Callie was a standout and can make the statement that in 1978, he was the best 118-pound wrestler in Division III.

Callie is one of only five Marauders to win an NCAA Championship, one of two to reach the national championship match twice, and along with Andy Zook, Callie is one of two three-time All-Americans in program history.

In his very first varsity season of 1977-78, Callie stood at the top of the podium at the season’s most important event. He conquered a bracket of 38 wrestlers in dominant fashion, scoring two pins, a 14-4 major decision and a 9-2 decision before winning the championship match by a 13-6 score. His quick rise to the national championship put Millersville within 1 ¼ points of winning the team championship and helped the Marauders to their best-ever team finish. With the win, he punched a ticket to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships held at the University of Maryland.

As a junior in 1978-79, Callie finished third at the highly competitive PSAC Championships and won the Belles Tournament held at Millersville, and again reached the NCAA Championships, where he pushed through the bracket undefeated to the championship bout. He was edged by just two points, 8-6, in the national title match. His finish landed him a spot in the Division I Championships held in Ames, Iowa.

Callie’s senior season included a PSAC runner-up finish and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships. He won his final match with a dominant 16-4 major decision. At season’s end, Callie received the Ted Rupp Award, given annually to Millersville’s most valuable wrestler.

Callie retired from radio ad sales after 36 years and now owns the Lakeside Restaurant in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania.
