Abby Hafer’s heroics on the volleyball court in the 1990’s put Millersville on the PSAC and NCAA Division II Atlantic Region maps. She is the first volleyball inductee in the MU Athletic Hall of Fame.
An AVCA All-Atlantic Region selection, Hafer earned Most Valuable Player honors in the 1995 PSAC tournament held at MU’s Brooks Hall Gymnasium when she led the Marauders to their first conference title and NCAA Division II tourney appearance.
In her four-year varsity career, Hafer helped pace Millersville to PSAC Eastern Division titles every season, including undefeated 10-0 league marks in 1993 and 1995, and a 38-2 conference record between ’92 and ’95. Against PSAC East foes, Hafer and the Marauders won 116 games and dropped only 13. Overall, the Marauders’ win-loss record during her career was an impressive 80-34, including 21-8 and 24-3 marks in her junior and senior seasons, respectively.
Named as the PSAC Rookie of the Year in 1992, Hafer earned All-PSAC first team honors for four consecutive years. She graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in secondary education.
Nearly a decade after her ‘Ville career concluded, Hafer’s name continues to be prominent in the MU volleyball record book. She holds the Millersville all-time marks for kills (1,413), kill average (3.8 per game), attack attempts (3,134) and attack percentage (.338), is second in solo blocks (146), and third in digs (959) and games played (372).
Her ‘Ville season standards include: most kills (403, 1995), kill average (4.3 per game, 1995), attack percentage (.360, 1995), and solo block (81, 1992). And, her 32 kills versus Edinboro in the 1995 PSAC championship final are the most in one match in team annals.
Hafer is employed as a teacher (emotional support) by the Penn Manor School District. In her spare time, she is involved in the Lancaster County Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
