Pollock's run, freshmen help push Millersville to third-place finish

| By:
LEBANON, Pa. - Bri Pollock ran Millersville's fastest 5K time since 2013, and three freshmen finished in the team's top five, helping the Marauders to a third-place finish at the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen Invitational Saturday.

Pollock's 18:55.6 put her in 11th place and stands as the 22nd-best 5K time in program history, slotting in just behind Shannon Cruz's 18:55 from Sept. 7, 2013. A trio of Marauders stayed close to Pollock with Kira Chebishev (19:03.5), Olivia Sunderland (19:05.3), and Maeve Boyes (19:26.0) all finishing inside the top 25 overall.

Along with Leanne Hodgson (20:03.3) taking 38th, three of Millersville's top-five runners were freshmen. Breia Mayes (20:04.5) crossed the line one spot after Hodgson, and Emma Armstrong (20:33.2) finished in 44th.

Millersville's 84 team points slotted in behind Navy's 23 and Lebanon Valley's 48 and ahead of 15 other teams. The only other Division II program in the field, Bowie State, placed 13th.

POST-RACE WITH COACH ANDY YOUNG
  • On the team's performance in its first invitational of the season: "We ran a solid first race of the season. We are trying to figure out where we are as a team right now. We had lots of 5K PRs, which is really encouraging for the team."
  • On standouts and surprises: "Bri had a very strong race, as did Kira and Olivia. The Naval Academy is very good, and LVC has a very strong team as well, so to stay competitive with them is a very good first step for us."

UP NEXT
  • Millersville is off for two weeks until the Dickinson Invitational on Sept. 27.
