'Ville men's golf eyes NCAA Championships berth
5/6/2025 10:06:00 AM | Men's Golf
ERIE, Pa. - Scott Vandegrift's Millersville men's golf program has been a fixture in the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional for over a decade. His young but talented 2025 squad is looking to do what no Millersville team has done since 2003, and that is qualify for the NCAA Championship with a top-three finish at the super regional.
Millersville reached the super regional field as the No. 6 seed from the Atlantic Region and is one of 20 teams vying for a berth to the NCAA Championships by finishing third or better. The Marauders are in the super regional field for the 10th time in 11 seasons and for the third season in a row. The Marauders are plenty familiar with the challenge in front of them, having finished second in a field of eight teams at "Bud" Elwell Invitational in October, which was also played at Whispering Woods Golf Club--the site of this week's super regional. Millersville shot rounds of 300 and 303 and was topped only by Gannon, which is the region's No. 1 seed and the reigning super region champion.
Millersville sophomore Timothy Peters is the region's second-ranked individual golfer and came within one shot of earning an individual berth to the NCAA Championships in 2024, finishing the 54-hole event at 5-over-par, clipped by Adelphi's Filip Wetterqvist. Peters is certainly a contender again. He and teammate Eric Miller shot match 2-over scores at Whispering Woods in the fall, finishing in a tie for fourth place. Peters' scoring average of 71.3 is in line to set the program's single-season record, and he hasn't finished lower than seventh on the leaderboard in his 12 events this season. Only three Millersville golfers--Chad Schulze (2000), Robert Coyne (2013), and Connor Sheehan (2018)--have qualified as individuals for the NCAA Championships. It requires being one of the top two individual finishers in the field who are not members of a qualifying team.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS
Millersville finished 11th in the 20-team super regional last season but was well within striking distance of a top-five finish entering the final round. Historically, teams that can post three rounds of 300 or lower are nearly guaranteed a top-three finish. Millersville fired a 295 in round two, but posted a 312 in the opening round and a 311 in the final round. The Marauders finished just 13 shots out of qualifying position. In 2023, Millersville finished in a tie for seventh, 10 shots out of qualifying position. Vandegrift's teams also finished in the top 10 in 2015 and 2016.
Peters is in the midst of arguably the best individual season in Millersville golf history. He won the PSAC Championship and was named the PSAC Golfer of the Year as a freshman in 2023-24, and he's followed that performance by winning five events, earning the PSAC Athlete of the Week award five times and finishing no lower than fourth in 11 of 12 events. He has a strong track record in 54-hole events, having placed first and fourth at his two PSAC Championships, sixth at last season's super regional, and first and ninth in his two appearances at the Vulcan Invitational.
Millersville hasn't seen competition since April 21, but the team is coming off back-to-back wins at the Husky Spring Invitational and F&M Invitational. Freshman Logan Wagner won both events, but the Marauders did not compete against a super regional qualifying team in those events. The last time they went head-to-head with super regional qualifiers was the IUP Invitational on April 16, where they finished 10th out of 13 teams. The Marauders finished behind six teams that will compete at this week's super regional.
Vandegrift's five-man lineup is without a senior and features a pair of freshmen. Wagner could be Millersville's x-factor this week. He played in five of the team's first 10 events, but he's shot a combined 7-under in his last 36 competitive holes. Eric Miller is also capable of low scores, boasting a 75.6 scoring average and six top-10 finishes. He was outstanding in the fall, finishing 10th or better in his first five tournaments before placing 17th at the PSAC Championships. Freshman Josh Baker has steadily improved in the spring, posting an impressive 16th-place, 3-over finish at the two-day, Division I Abarta Coca-Cola Invitational. The most veteran of Millersville's lineup is Bo Meakim, who has top-10 finishes in two of his last four events, placed seventh in the event at Whispering Woods earlier this season and took 14th at the PSAC Championship.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Gannon, Charleston and Saint Thomas Aquinas are the favorites. Gannon is ranked No. 29 in the nation and has been dominant all season with a 290.1 adjusted scoring average, six wins in 11 tournaments, and an impressive 107-13-3 head-to-head record in tournaments. The Golden Knights blew away the field at the PSAC Championship, firing a 9-under and winning by 40 shots. They are the reigning super region champs as well, winning last season's event by 23 shots over Charleston. Gannon's Mattia Parrini is the region's No. 1-ranked golfer with a 71.2 scoring average and under-par finishes in seven of 11 tournaments. He was the PSAC champ, firing 8-under for 54 holes.
Charleston is the region's No. 2-ranked team and the automatic qualifier from the Mountain East Conference. It has won six of the nine tournaments it has entered, shot under par as a team in two events and owns a 295.3 adjusted scoring average. Saint Thomas Aquinas' Tanner Little and Djaia Darrason are ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the East Region and the team owns a 295.2 scoring average. Saint Thomas Aquinas finished third at last season's super regional.
Keep an eye on Davis & Elkins and West Liberty as well. Both teams played well at the Atlantic/East Preview held at Whispering Woods on April 21-22. Davis & Elkins tied with Gannon at 15-over, and West Liberty placed third at 21-over for two rounds. West Liberty's Brogan Bennett won the event, topping 119 other golfers with a 3-under total. He comes into the super regional ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region. D&E's Aidan Talent also shot 3-under.
