Opportunistic offense helps 'Ville women’s lacrosse prevail over Shippensburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Despite a packed penalty box, Millersville's second-quarter shootout helped them eke out a 14–13 victory over PSAC East opponent Shippensburg.

There were 17 red and green cards distributed between the Raiders and Marauders. Millersville capitalized on four of their nine man-up possessions to secure their seventh win.

"It was very competitive from the first whistle," said head coach Mike Faith. "Shippensburg fought all the way back, but I was really proud of how we came out and established our will on offense, followed by some great defensive stops."

The Marauders started strong with a 3–0 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Raiders answered with two quick goals. Ashlyn Simonetti fired a shot just inside the eight-meter arc, scoring in the upper right-hand corner to bring the Raiders within two goals. Shippensburg then scored two more goals to close out the first quarter, tying the game at 4–4.

Shippensburg scored the second quarter's first goal, but Millersville responded with five unanswered goals to take a 9–5 lead. Ella Linthicum led the charge, scoring two goals, followed by Kayleigh Dunn, Mary Moraca, and Kaleigh Funk, who each found the back of the net. Jodylynn Cadden capped off the quarter with a man-up goal, extending the Marauders' lead to 10–7 at halftime.

Katlyn Krebs played a massive role throughout the game but was particularly stellar in the second quarter. The junior scooped up three ground balls, collected one draw control, and caused two turnovers, making significant contributions on the defensive end.

"I know she's very hard on herself, but I thought she had a really good game," Faith said. "Everybody makes mistakes, but without her draws and caused turnovers, there's no way we would have won that game."

A quiet third quarter led to a nail-biting fourth quarter. Both teams traded goals to start, but the Raiders then scored three unanswered goals, cutting the deficit to just one, 13–12. Millersville was handed three cards in the fourth quarter, and Shippensburg converted all three man-up opportunities into goals.

"We had eight cards, so we were in the penalty box a lot," said Faith. "Those are easy opportunities for the other team to build confidence. That's something we'll focus on—being more disciplined and avoiding the box as much."

Rachel Keeney scored her third goal of the day with three minutes remaining, extending Millersville's lead to 14–12. Shippensburg pushed back and scored with just under two minutes remaining, making it a one-goal game.

Brianna Gora helped seal the Raiders' fate by securing the final draw control. Millersville played keep-away as time expired, earning their third PSAC East victory.

Millersville will enter the back half of their season and face Bloomsburg on Wednesday, March 9, at 1 p.m.
