MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Millersville track & field team is slated to host its first of two home meets this season in the Millersville Metrics this weekend.
The Marauders began their outdoor season at the Towson Invite last weekend, getting a good start on PSAC Championship qualifying bids, including an NCAA mark in the hammer throw from Sarah Hessler. Head coach Andy Young said he liked what he saw out of his group in their first meet outside, a good sign for a team with lofty goals come May.
"Our sprinters look like they've made some improvements, which was really nice to see," said Young. "Obviously the throwers did really well. I think Sarah swept three out of the four throws there, and we had a really nice surprise in Erin Krauss in the javelin throw as well. So that was pretty exciting. And I think the distance runners are going to probably be showing up a little bit more at this meet this weekend, so it'll be interesting to see what those guys do this weekend too. But I'm excited. We made improvements since indoors, so that's good."
It was dominating weekend for Millersville in the throws last weekend, and the Marauders will look to replicate and improve on those performances. The trio of Hessler, Maddy Downs, and Seya Trujillo owned the top of the leaderboard in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put, and Krauss was a surprise standout in the javelin. Young mentioned his three indoor All-PSAC athletes as ones to watch, with Megan Malecki in the pole vault, Aasly De Leon in the 100-meter dash, and Katelyn Murphy in the 100-meter hurdles. Millersville will be well-represented on the track across the sprint and distance events. Young is excited to see the progression from his mid-distance runners in Shelby Derkosh, Aubrey and Jillian Sydnor, and Cora Heilman. Other athletes who Young is looking to repeat their successes from either last week or last season are Emily Massage, Mary Weiss, Breia Mayes, as well as the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams.
The Millersville Metrics meet is a tradition for the Marauders, giving them the rare chance of competing on their home campus. Young said his team circles the date on the calendar for this weekend, calling it a great opportunity for the program as a whole.
"I think they do look forward to these home meets because this one of the few times that their friends can actually see them that are on campus, and it's a lot easier for a lot of their family members to come to this one," Young said. "I know a lot of family and friends come out to the meet, which is really nice. And then we have a good alumni contingent as well, and this is one of the few times they actually get to see live in person our athletes."
The competition begins at 1 p.m. on Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Full results of the weekend's events can be found HERE.
