MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — A first-half shutout and a full-team effort helped Millersville secure a 16-4 win over the Shepherd Rams.
"I thought it was a total team effort," said head coach Mike Faith. "Just from the opening whistle, Mary set the tone by winning draws, and we took care of our shots. Defensively, we held them to five shots in the first half, and that has been a big focus in the second half of our season."
Offensively, Ashlyn Simonetti led the charge. The senior scored a season-high six goals and recorded two assists for a combined eight points, bringing her season total to 43 goals.
"Ashlyn's playing the way I was hoping she would this year because she's got all the talent in the world, and she let the game come to her today," said Faith. "She's very deceptive with how she shoots and the way she shoots. She made her teammates look good on some passes, and then she stuck a couple of nice shots today."
KC O'Neill logged her second-lowest goals-against total of the season (2) and blanked the Rams in the first half. She made four saves before halftime to help the Marauders build a commanding 10-0 lead and enter running clock territory.
"KC is the anchor back there, and I thought she was rock steady," Faith said. "We work on holding and being patient because she's so good when she is holding and being patient."
Millersville fired off 22 shots in the first half, placing 14 on target and scoring 10. Simonetti netted five, followed by two from Mary Moraca. Rachel Keeney and Jodylynn Cadden also got in on the action with a goal apiece.
Keeney and Kayleigh Dunn scored again to send the Marauders up 12-0, but the Rams finally notched their first goal in the 42nd minute. Shepherd added one more to close out the third, but the 12-2 gap was too wide to bridge.
The Marauders showed no signs of letting up, outscoring the Rams 4-2 in the fourth to cruise to a 16-4 victory and secure their fifth PSAC East win.
"At this point, every game is a playoff game for us, and we're trying to go 3–0," said Faith. "That's our main focus—just take one day at a time and keep practicing together. That's our goal."
Depending on the outcome of the next three matches, the Marauders could position themselves for playoff contention. They travel on Saturday, April 19, to face East Stroudsburg at noon. The Warriors narrowly won their first meeting of the season, 13–11.
