Keeney’s milestone and team effort helped Millersville push past Wilmington

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Rachel Keeney broke a long-awaited milestone, scoring her 100th career goal in Millersville's 19–11 team win over Wilmington.

The Marauders dominated across all areas of the play. The team secured 76% of draw controls, outshot the Wildcats 39–21, and forced 13 caused turnovers. Goalkeeper KC O'Neill made six saves to support the defense.

Opening the 2025 season with intensity, Millersville scored the first three goals of the game and did not look back. Keeney initiated the scoring with an unassisted goal just under the fourth minute. Ashlynn Simonetti and Mary Moraca followed Keeney's cue, finding the back of the net.

The Wildcats' leading scorer, Ella Royer, had two solo attempts to put her team on the board, but it was not enough as Kayleigh Dunn and Ella Linthicum aided in extending the first-quarter lead 5–2.

Millersville netted three more goals to start and go up 8–2. Keeney scored the eighth goal of the game in the fourth minute of the second quarter to add 100 career goals to her resume. Royer from Wilmington slowed the Marauder pace, notching her third goal of the game, but that was quickly ended as Millersville scored three more goals.

At the half, Millersville led 12–5 and showed diversity through their offense with eight different attacking threats finding the back of the net and six assists in 12 goals.

Wildcat Sophie Shive was able to capitalize for her team, scoring the first goal of the third period, but the Marauders retaliated with three goals of their own. In two and a half minutes, Shannon Meder, Moraca, and Rachel Keeney found the back of the net.

Wilmington outscored Millersville 5–3 in the final quarter, but the momentum and expiring time were insufficient to close the gap and return.

The Marauders improved to a 1-0 record under head coach Mike Faith's management. Their next game is Feb. 26 at Caldwell.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Millersville was almost flawless on their clears, having success on 15 of 16 attempts.
  • The Marauders scooped up 20 ground balls.
  • The team combined 25 draw controls, and 11 came from Moraca.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH MIKE FAITH:

  • Overall thoughts: "The team played really hard. They played like they played in practice. Wilmington is a good team. They had a lot of success last year. They lost some players, but they have a bunch of really good players. We knew we had to play a good game, a strong game. I think we jumped on them early, and then in the third quarter, their goalie got a little hot, and they switched the goalies. It wasn't perfect, and it never will be, but they never questioned themselves, and it was fun to watch them play with confidence."
  • Diversity having 10 different goal scorers: "That's great. I think we had a bunch of assisted goals, too, which we preach about being great teammates all the time. I want everybody to be a threat down there."
  • O'Neill in the net: "She looked a little more at ease being a sophomore this year, not a freshman. KC comes out to practice, and all three goalies come out and work hard and practice. It was nice to see KC trust herself out there. She kind of made a couple of early stops and they were big. One was an eight-meter, and that was a huge stop. That's something that we've been really working on."
