Offensive field day fuels Marauders’ victory over Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – The Marauders opened fire on offense and clamped down on defense against Caldwell to cruise to an unanswered 21–0 win.

Millersville has not blanked a team since 1979, but they have come close in 2018 and 2016 in containing opponents to one goal.

The offense was flowing as Millersville shared the rock and had 10 individuals who scored goals. The goal-scoring festival was led by Kaleigh Funk who netted four goals and hat tricks for Rachel Keeney, Mary Moraca, and Jodylynn Cadden. The attack put this game away in the first half as they found the back of the net 16 times.

"The offensive players are gaining more confidence and I can see it happening in practice," said head coach Mike Faith. "They trust each other and played very selflessly."

Selflessness was reflected on the field and in the stats as 14 of the 21 goals were assisted. Six Marauders notched points for assists but Funk, Keeney, and Clara Stamper tallied three apiece.

Defense wins games, the Marauders made that known. As a team they held Caldwell to five shots, placing two on target. All three goalkeepers, KC O'Neill, McKenna Billie, and Lara Kruck put in a shift to keep a clean slate.

"Anytime you can post a shutout it's a great day for everyone down there" mentioned Faith. "They were communicating and playing together which is something they take a lot of pride in."

The defense collected 16 ground balls and caused 15 turnovers. After regaining possession, Millersville perfectly executed clearing the ball going 8 for 8.

The Marauders will continue on the road traveling to Indiana University of Pa. on Saturday, March 1 in a redemption match against the Crimson Hawks.

"I am looking forward to the game on Saturday, said Faith. "They took care of us pretty easily last year so I know we will be very focused for the next two practices. I'm very confident that the team will play like we practice and let the scoreboard take care of itself."

  • Maggie Handley and Brianna Gora recorded their first collegiate goal.
  • Funk tallied a career-high in goals (4), assists (3), and points (7).
