SARASOTA, Fla. - Four members of the Millersville University women's swimming team traveled to Sarasota, Florida, to compete in the CSCAA Open Water National Championship.
Hannah Baumgardner,
Jane McClelland,
Claire Weaver, and
Izabella Wreski each earned a qualification time for the event and represented the Marauders in the 5K race, which began at 10:30 a.m.
The race took place at Nathan Benderson Park, a premier 600-acre community and sports destination. Centered around a 400-acre man-made lake, the venue was originally created during interstate construction before being transformed into a world-class competition site. Nathan Benderson Park has hosted major events such as the 2017 World Rowing Championships, NCAA regattas, and multiple USA Swimming Open Water National Championships. All participants in the event are collegiate student-athletes who are eligible to compete for their NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA member institutions for the current school year and meet the specific event qualifying criteria. For the 5K, the qualifying time had to be 1:09.00.Â
Baumgardner led the Marauders, crossing the finish line first with a time of 1:01:56.2 to place 12th among Division II competitors. Weaver followed just minutes later, finishing in 1:04:14.1, with McClelland close behind at 1:05:24. Wreski rounded out the group, touching in only six seconds later at 1:05:30. All four Marauders earned top-25 finishes in the Division II field.
The Marauders are back in the pool Jan 10, when they travel to Glenside to face Arcadia University.Â
