MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University women's swimming team captured its first win of the season, edging out the Golden Bears from Kutztown University 135-127 in a close dual meet. The Marauders earned first-place finishes in seven events, along with five second-place and two third-place performances.
The Marauders opened the meet strong with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of
Abigail Lowman,
Leah Eckert,
Violet Pizzillo, and
Anna Sassaman clocked a time of 1:50.89, nearly three seconds ahead of Kutztown's second-place squad. Millersville carried that momentum into the 1,000-yard freestyle, where
Hannah Baumgardner,
Jane McClelland, and
Christiana Snavely swept the top three spots.
In the 200-yard freestyle,
Claire Weaver earned a second-place finish with a time of 2:01.11, while Lowman followed with a first-place swim in the 100-yard backstroke. Eckert and
Izabella Wreski took first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, and Pizzillo added a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
Sassaman scored in her next two events, while Lowman and Weaver once again claimed the top two spots in the 200-yard backstroke. Eckert continued her standout day with another victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:29.22. The Marauders closed out the meet strong as McClelland and Weaver added two more second-place finishes, and Lowman capped the day with a first-place swim in the 400-yard individual medley.
"This was a great team win," said swimming graduate assistant
Aubrey Bowles. "We talked about execution and toughness coming into this meet because Kutztown is a very strong team, and we knew it would take a lot of energy and fight to come out with a win. We had a great week of training, and now it's important to use this momentum to work even harder these next two weeks to get ready for our mid-season invite."
The Marauders travel to Franklin and Marshall College Nov 21 for a three-day invitational meet.
