MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville University women's volleyball team lost their PSAC conference home opener to the Bald Eagles from Lock Haven University in three sets. Set scores were 25-12, 25-22, and 25-19.
Millersville (4-13, 0-4) struggled offensively, finishing with a .125 hitting percentage. The Marauders recorded 20 kills, three aces, eight blocks, and 30 digs in the match. Lock Haven (4-12, 2-2) outperformed the Marauders, tallying 42 kills and 14 aces. Offensively, Taylor Welter, Alex Nava, and Sam White led the charge, supported by 16 assists from Trinity Baldwin. White also made a strong impact at the net, posting a team-high six blocks on the night.
The first set began with back-and-forth action, with the score tied at 3-3 before Lock Haven sparked a 4-1 run to take control. Down 9-5, Millersville capitalized on several attack errors to pull back within one. However, the Bald Eagles quickly regained momentum, using a dominant 7-1 run to stretch their lead. The Marauders were unable to recover as Lock Haven closed out the set with a commanding 9-2 run.
In the second set, White and Welter got the Marauders off to a strong start, scoring three consecutive points for an early lead. Lock Haven responded with five unanswered points to swing the momentum. Trailing 13-7, Millersville chipped away with timely contributions from Caroline Halsey and Nava, eventually pulling within one. White and Nava tied the set at 14, and later, a 4-0 Millersville run pushed them ahead 21-20. However, Lock Haven closed the set on a 5-1 run to take a two-set advantage.
The third set opened evenly, with the teams locked at 4-4 before Lock Haven again surged ahead with four straight points. Millersville struggled to gain traction until Halsey and Nava helped tie the set at 10. The Bald Eagles responded with an 8-1 run, regaining control. Despite efforts from Marin Esch and key blocks by White and Nava to slow the momentum, the Marauders couldn't find an offensive rhythm and ultimately dropped the match in straight sets.
"The freshmen that went into the game did well," said head coach Brian Smith. "When Sidonia Cecco moved to the back line, the defense held some key attacks."
The Marauders' next match is Saturday, Oct 11 at 1 p.m. when they face the Huskies from Bloomsburg University as they continue their PSAC conference play.
