SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Millersville Marauders put on a show, earning five bonus-point wins to cruise past Shippensburg, 38-9. This victory marked head coach Jerry Boland's 50th in six years.
Bryce Beatty led off for the Marauders at 125 pounds. The senior wasted no time with an immediate takedown over Noah Gilgore from Shippensburg. Beatty followed up with three consecutive near falls worth four points each. Beatty went on to win by technical fall 15–0.
Taylor Robinson won by forfeit, giving the Marauders a quick 11–0 team lead. Nick Cottone (133) followed up Beatty's performance with an 8-0 major decision win. The 133-pounder had a first-period takedown to take the 3–0 lead over the Raiders' Calvin Lederer. Cottone accumulated two minutes of riding time in the second period and finished the last period with a reversal and two points for stall warnings called against Lederer.Â
Marcus Gable (157) played the long game and out-wrestled Anthony DeAngelo. Both wrestlers displayed quick movements, but DeAngelo received a stall warning and Gable struck first with a takedown to earn three points. DeAngelo was penalized twice more for stalling, and Gable racked up a late takedown to win by a major decision, 8–0.
Andrew Vogelbacher (174) won by 11-2 major decision over Cole Lang. Vogelbacher had the upper hand early, wrestling for the takedown. Limited action in the second period set up an action-packed third period. Vogelbacher exploded out of an escape and shot for a takedown. Wrestling out of bounds, Vogelbacher opted to start in the neutral position to give Lang an escape point but rebutted with a takedown to earn the team four points.Â
Tyler Hurst (184) was aggressive from the jump and landed a takedown against Owen Koch. Right on the edge of being called out of bounds, Hurst kept his foot in and cradled Koch to pin the Raider in 2:45.
Bishop McCoy closed out the dual with a 2-0 decision win over Connor Livingston. The Marauder's only points came from a stalling penalty on Livingston and McCoy's second-period riding time.
The Marauders have won their last seven duals and improved to an 11–4 record. Millersville will honor their seniors on Saturday in a dual meet against PSAC rivals Pitt-Johnstown and Seton Hill. The first match against Pitt-Johnstown will be at 2 p.m. followed by the 4 p.m. Seton Hill showdown.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JERRY BOLAND:
- Overall thoughts on the match: "For the most part, I thought we set the tone in all phases tonight. As a team, we are starting to wrestle consistently throughout the match. We believe in ourselves as we wrestle through positions and we trust our conditioning."
- The team got five bonus point wins, how can you speak on behalf of the team's grit: "We stress pushing the pace and scoring the next point. Whether we are up or down in the match. It's how we practice and it goes back to the consistency part. I'm really pleased with our mentality there."
- How to carry this momentum into the weekend: "We have to get back to work tomorrow. Short turnaround so we will enjoy this one tonight and look to continue that consistent style of getting after it on Saturday."
- Additional comments: Just proud of the energy we had tonight. They guys on the mat wrestled hard and the guys on the bench were into the match the whole time."
