Team effort leads to a flawless performance at Millersville Duals

| By:

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Marauders went unscathed at the Millersville Duals, posting a 4–0 performance. Despite missing starters due to injury, the reserves stepped up for the host team and maintained the team's winning ways. Millersville defeated American International College (AIC) 25–16, Felician 40–12, Camden County 50–0 and Salem 28–15.

The team rolled at the duals; nine Marauders showcased an unblemished performance and cumulatively earned 14 bonus point wins throughout 39 matches.

Bryce Beatty, Daniel Sinclair, and Bishop McCoy battled in all four bouts to finish the day 4–0. Right on their tracks were Cael Rossi and Bruce Vaughan going 3-0. Finally, Marcus Gable concluded the day with a 3–1 mark.

Beatty (125) earned two necessary wins over AIC and Salem. The senior fought for a gritty 9–7 decision win over Daniel McLaughlin from AIC and showed off his speed against Devin Fowler from Salem pinning him in 1:05. Beatty recorded one more decision win over Lucas Stinger from Camden County and a forfeit win against Felician to conclude his perfect day.

Sinclair (149), a freshman, stepped up and made his presence known right away, breezing to an 11–4 decision win against Cqari Bacote from AIC to earn three important points. The following two matches were forfeits, but he ended the dual with a bonus point win. Sinclair also had a 19–3 technical fall win over Seth Holt from Salem and logged five takedowns as well as four near-fall points to secure the victory.

McCoy, Millersville's sturdy heavyweight, asserted his dominance at the duals. The redshirt senior recorded a forfeit win, two pins clocking in at 1:27 and 1:07, and a 7–2 decision win. McCoy has led the team all season in pins and by adding two more to his running total, he stands at eight, a season-best.

Rossi (133) also stepped up to the challenge on the mat, taking home a 9–4 decision win over Joseph Aldrich from AIC. The action started in the second period when Rossi secured four near-fall points and a takedown to go up 7–1. Rossi finished the battle by escaping twice to walk away with the victory. The 133-pounder nabbed a forfeit win against Felician and claimed a 1:03 fall against Salem's David Makupson; the bonus point victory marked Rossi's first fall as a Marauder.

Vaughan, (197) a strength within the Marauder line-up, earned a forfeit win and two major decision wins. Overall, he combined for six takedowns, a near fall worth four points, an escape and riding time to win 14-2 and 12-2.

The Marauders will resume PSAC competition against the Raiders at Shippensburg on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JERRY BOLAND:

  • How did the reserves step up today: "I think it starts from the beginning, we talk about how everybody in the room is equally important. Whether you're first, second, third, fourth straight, it doesn't matter. You have to have the same effort every day. I really do think that that's a standard we set in our room. When we're in such a predicament like this where guys continue to get banged up, our depth shows. It showed last week with the win over Grand Valley."
  • How to keep the team pushing for bonus point wins: "Whether we're winning or losing, we focus on just scoring the next point. I think that's just the mentality they took. I was really proud of them for not sitting on just a win and going after the bonus points, but they also have the same attitude, when they're down, that's, hey, let's just focus on the next point and that's what we did."
  • How to regain focus going back into PSAC duals: "I tell them all the time, even if we don't wrestle our best and we don't have our starters out there, that's not what it is. We expect when we send 10 guys out there that 10 guys are going to get the job done. On Monday we'll get back to work and the roster is going to work hard in the room. From that work, the 10 best guys will wrestle on Thursday to start this PSAC grind. Hopefully our starters start working our way back. If not, I trust the other guys in the room."
