Wrestling scraps with high-end competition

| By:

LANCASTER, Pa. — Millersville wrestling traveled locally to Franklin & Marshall to compete in the annual David Lehman Open. Competition at this open was at an all-time high as 20 Division I programs traveled to compete.

"I thought we got after it today," said head coach Jerry Boland. "Our guys had a great opportunity to compete against some high-level competition and they embraced it."

Bishop McCoy and Daniel Sinclair earned a pair of wins and Cael Rossi clinched a win in his respective weight class.

McCoy (285) was edged early in the tournament as he lost by decision 2–0. Showcasing resilience, the redshirt senior won the next two matches in the consolation bracket. McCoy had a takedown early in the first period against Riley Godek, who wrestled unattached from their respective university. To secure the win, McCoy rallied for another takedown in the third period to win by decision, 6–1. McCoy's next match was against Able Ngoh from Kent State. There was minimal action in the first two periods, but McCoy read Ngoh's movements right and capitalized on back-to-back takedowns to triumph 8–3. McCoy forfeited his last match to end on a 2–2 day.

Sinclair, at 149 pounds, edged a 5–1 decision win over Parker Lyden from Campbell University. Both wrestlers were evenly matched, but Sinclair got the advantage in the third period from a strong snap to set himself up to acquire three points from a takedown. Sinclair dropped the second match but rebounded in the consolation match. The freshman had a dominant win over Franklin and Marshall's Seth Weaver. Sinclair breezed to a 14–4 major decision win and recorded a takedown in every period; two came in the third. Sinclair fell in his fourth match but posted a 2–2 record.

Rossi, a freshman, had a commanding 16–1 technical fall win over Kyle Hill who wrestled unattached from their respective university. The 133-pounder finished with a 1–2 record but kept the matches close, losing by major decisions to Division I opponents.

"I'm sure we wanted to win more, but I saw a lot of the big picture today," said Boland. "Guys understand what it takes to wrestle hard for seven minutes. We will continue to work in the room and improve, but overall, I was proud of our effort today."

The Marauders carry this effort and attitude into next week as PSAC matches will begin. Millersville will travel to Gannon to compete on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. in the Gannon Quad. Aside from the host Gannon, Millersville will take on Fairmont State University and Grand Valley State University.
