No athlete in the history of Millersville University, male or female, regardless of the sport, can match Sunflower Greene’s athletic credentials. A two-time NCAA Champion in the indoor shot put, Greene earned All-America status eight times and won 11 PSAC Championships in five different events.
The PSAC’s coaches named Greene the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and Indoor Field Athlete of the Year a combined six times. She was also named USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Field Athlete of the Year three times. Greene broke Millersville throwing records in the discus, indoor and outdoor shot put, hammer throw and weight throw and smashed PSAC records in the outdoor shot put, hammer throw, weight throw and indoor shot put, while setting championship meet records in three outdoor events.
From 2017-2019, Greene earned three All-America honors in the indoor shot put, one in the weight throw, three in the outdoor shot put, and one for the hammer throw.
Greene’s greatness at Millersville was immediate. As a freshman in 2016, Greene won finished All-PSAC in the shot put and hammer throw, earned the first of 15 USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region honors and was named the PSAC Outdoor Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore, Greene earned her first All-America finish in the indoor shot put, and in the outdoor season, Greene won the shot put and hammer at the PSAC Championships in record-setting fashion. She was named the PSAC Outdoor Championships Field MVP and the Field Athlete of the Year.
Greene’s 2018 indoor season cemented her place in Millersville history as she became Millersville’s first track and field athlete to win a national championship event. At the NCAA Championships in Pittsburg, Kansas, Greene set a PSAC indoor shot put record with a heave of 53-4 1/4. That same season, she was named PSAC Indoor Athlete of the Year and the PSAC Indoor Championships Athlete of the Meet. That success carried into the outdoor season where she won PSAC championships in the shot put and hammer throw and finished as the national runner-up in the shot put.
As a senior, Greene repeated top honors at the PSAC Indoor Championships before repeating as national champion in the indoor shot put with a toss of 53-3. She capped her career in the outdoor season by pulling off a rare feat—winning the shot put, hammer throw and discus at the PSAC Outdoor Championships and earning the overall PSAC Championship Athlete of the Meet award. Greene went on to earn All-America status in the shot put and hammer throw.
After graduating with a degree in business in 2019, Greene earned a master’s degree from Bloomsburg while working as an assistant coach. Greene now works as a financial analyst at High Real Estate Group and works as a volunteer assistant with Millersville’s throwers.
