QUARRYVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville women's golf team battled a persistent, howling wind to take first place in Saturday's Millersville Women's Invitational held at Tanglewood Golf Club. Millersville junior Charley Kirby finished as the tournament medalist, earning her first career win.
The wind made scoring a challenge on the par-72 course, but Kirby came within three shots of her career-best with a 10-over 82. She edged West Chester's Kirsten Vanderhorst by one shot. The Marauders bested seven other teams and finished with a 57-over total, six shots clear of runner-up West Chester.
The win was Millersville's second in a row and fifth of the season matching the program record set by the 2013-14 and 2014-15 teams.
Three Marauders placed inside the top 10 of the 46-golfer field. The key to Kirby's round was birdies on the par-five second and par-four fifth. There were only six total birdies in the entire tournament, and Kirby was the only golfer with two.
Amanda Wolf tied for fourth at 14-over, placing in the top 10 for the seventh consecutive event. Emma Schotsch posted a 15-over for sixth place. Taylor Hileman tied for 11th to round out Millersville's countable scores. Anabelle McGowan placed 13th as an individual.
