Cook earns 100th career win; Marauders fall to Kutztown

| By:

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville wrestling recognized eight seniors Friday night but fell short of the wanted result against the Kutztown Golden Bears, 22-14.

Craig Cook reached a milestone in his wrestling career as he earned his 100th career win. He is the ninth Marauder to achieve this prestigious breakthrough in program history. At 149-pounds, Cook had an early takedown in the first period to give him the 3-1 decision win over Ali Alicea.

Devin Flannery, at 133-pounds, turned in a dominant performance as he won by 19-3 technical fall over Javien DeLeon. Flannery had five take downs through the three periods and only surrendered points from escapes. Flannery leads the Marauders in technical falls earning his sixth tonight.

Aidan Micheli at 141-pounds pulled through with a gritty, 4-2 decision over Jared Fulton. There was no action in the first period but Fulton accumulated the first point in the second period from an escape. Micheli got an early escape in the third period to even the playing field 1-1. Fulton earned a penalty point to go up 2-1, but Micheli had the answer with seconds to go in the third, scoring a takedown off a restart to claim the win.

In the 174-pound weight class, Jonathan Parrilla earned the late, third-period decision by a 5-2 score over Alex Ward. Parrilla was down 1-0 going into the third period but changed that with a quick escape and a late takedown. He earned his extra point through ride time to claim the win.Millersville held a slight 15-14 lead after Parrilla's win, but Kutztown won the final three matches, executing a similar formula as when they edged the Marauders 19-17 a season ago.

THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH JERRY BOLAND

  • Overall thoughts on the match: "It was a tough match. We knew they were going to come out hard, and we knew we were going out to wrestle hard. It came down to a couple breaks, and you know, sometimes that happens. I am still proud of our guys and I will always be proud of them, but they know we needed 10 guys to do their job tonight and that did not happen."
  • Thoughts on Cook earning his 100th win: "Craig has put a lot of time into this sport. He is a hard worker, he is a great kid, he has his priorities straight and a great family. That encompasses what we are trying to do here and he earned that. I am happy for him and I am happy for his family."
  • On what the seniors mean to him: "I came in here two years ago, and they all accepted me as their coach, and they bought in. They do all the things I asked them to do. Even though I only coached them for a couple of years, I feel like I have coached them for much longer. I have built many strong relationships with them and I am blessed for them to be in my program."
  • Thoughts on moving forward: "Tomorrow is a good day for some guys in our program for our back-ups and redshirts to get some experience and finish the end of the year on a strong note. They work just as hard as the starters so we try to give them every opportunity to compete."
