JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The impressive start to the 2024-25 season continued for the Millersville men's golf team at the two-day Sunnehanna Collegiate Invitational. Against a deep field including some of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, Millersville placed second behind top-five finishes from sophomore Timothy Peters and freshman Sebastian Botero.
The PSAC Championship is still three weeks away, but Millersville already looks to be in top form. After falling in a playoff in the first tournament of the season and winning the Dickinson Invitational last week, the Marauders stood up against their toughest competition to date over 36 holes on Monday and Tuesday. Millersville posted a 288 on day one and sat just three shots behind eventual winner Gannon. The Marauders followed with a 286 while Gannon pulled away with an impressive 1-under 279 in Tuesday's final round.
While Millersville finished 10 shots behind Gannon, it was eight shots clear of Ohio Dominican and 11 shots in front of the two nearest PSAC finishers--IUP and West Chester. Millersville finished ahead of eight PSAC teams.
Peters recorded his third top-five in as many outings, shooting back-to-back even-par 70s. Gannon's Mattia Parrini opened with a 3-under 67 and held on to a one-shot win over his teammate Rasmus Seppanen, who shot his own 67 on Tuesday. Botero earned his second top-10 finish in three collegiate tournaments by turning in a pair of impressive rounds. He shot a career-low 70 in round one and a 72 in round two to finish at 2-over for the tournament and in a tie for fifth place.
Eric Miller also found his way into the top 10 for the third time in as many starts, following up Monday's 74 with an even-par 70 on Tuesday. Jake Schmonov posted a 74 in both rounds, tying for 27th. Freshman Josh Baker posted a career-best 70 on Tuesday, bouncing back nicely from a first-round 85.
Millersville gets another shot at Gannon in a week as it travels to Erie for the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational on Oct. 7-8.
