LANCASTER, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team faced Division I competition in their return to action at Friday's David H. Lehman Open.
"It was a D1 open tournament. We were the only non-D1 team there," said head coach Jerry Boland. "That being said, I think we wrestled aggressively. We didn't back down from this type of challenge. However, I do think we let a few matches slip away. But they were mostly mistakes we can clean up."
Jonathan Parilla, wrestling at 165-pounds, went 3-2 on the day and logged his first pair of major decisions on the season. This helped Parrilla acquire an even split of 7-7 current season record.
Six Marauders ended the day with a 1-2 record. At 149 pounds, Craig Cook's sole 11-0 win was by major decision. Eli Tuckey, at 157 pounds, also tallied an 18-10 major decision win over Franklin & Marshall's Avery Clarke. In the 165-pound weight class, Nick Bennet had 10-0 major decision win over Harrison Mitchell from Kent State. In Brandon Connor's first match of the day, he won by fall (1:15) over Andrew Christie from Army. Anthony Giampietro, at 184 pounds, won 7-3 by decision over Zyan Hall from Navy. Bishop McCoy also earned himself one win at the tournament, winning 7-3 by decision.
THOUGHTS FROM JERRY BOLAND
- Thoughts on Parrilla's day: "Johnny wrestled very well today. He built up his confidence and got stronger each round. We decided to medically forfeit his fifth match, but he will be fine moving forward."
- On preparing for Pitt-Johnstown: "We are definitely looking forward to getting after it next week. Two PSAC duals back-to-back makes for an exciting weekend. UPJ took it to us last year so I'm sure our guys still have a sour taste in their mouths. So we will get back to work on Monday and get ready for a big time dual."
