LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - With 18 starters returning from the program's best PSAC East finish in 22 years, Millersville was voted to finish fifth in the coaches' PSAC Preseason Poll.
The Marauders finished tied for third in the East a season ago, posting a 4-3 record. The team won five of its final seven games of the season and in four of the losses, the Marauders were within a score in the fourth quarter. Reigning division champs Shepherd, which played in the NCAA Semifinals last season, received five of eight possible first-place votes to be the preseason favorite. Shepherd, however, must replace Harlon Hill Trophy-winning QB Tyson Bagent and NFL draft choice Joey Fisher on the offensive line. Kutztown picked up two first-place votes after going 8-3 a season removed from winning the PSAC Championship.
Defending PSAC champ IUP took first place in the Western Division with six first-place votes. Slippery Rock, which Millersville plays in week three, picked up two first-place votes. Also on Millersville's schedule are No. 4 Gannon and No. 6 Seton Hill.
The optimism for Millersville lies in the team's strong finish and returning veteran talent that includes all five offensive line starters, the top two pass catchers, All-PSAC East running back Jaheim Morris and sophomore quarterback Rob Footman Jr., who went 3-2 in games that he played last season. On the defensive side, Millersville brings back eight starters including former All-PSAC East safety Steve Sweeney, three-time All-PSAC East linebacker Isaiah Onuschak and 2022 first team selection Garrett Cox.
Millersville's season kicks off at home on Thursday, Aug. 31 against Saint Anselm.
