Hall of Fame Spotlight: Conor Gilbert '15

Conor Gilbert ‘15 is one of eight inductees for the 2023 Millersville Athletics Hall of Fame class. Millersvilleathletics.com is featuring each of the inductees is a series of spotlight stories. A true leader and a champion, Conor Gilbert is considered by longtime Millersville golf coach Scott Vandegrift as his program's most influential team captain. In that captaincy, Gilbert led his team to a PSAC Championship in 2013 while earning medalist honors, becoming just the third Marauder in program history to finish first at the conference championship event. 

Gilbert landed All-PSAC East First Team honors twice and owns Millersville's seventh-lowest career scoring average. His scoring averages in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons rank among the 15 best campaigns in program history. At the time of his graduation, he was one of just five Marauders to post sub-76.0 scoring averages in back-to-back seasons. 

Gilbert played 88 career rounds, ranking second all-time. He finished in the top 25 in 32 of his 40 career events, and over his final two seasons, he won three times and cracked the top 10 in 13 of 22 tournaments. 

His play directly impacted his team’s success, and during his junior and senior seasons, he elevated the Marauders to the top of the PSAC and the Atlantic Region. He the 2014 and 2015 teams to the NCAA Super Regional, and the ninth-place finish in his senior season is still the best in program history.

As a junior 2013-14, Gilbert emerged as one of the top golfers in the region, earning PING All-Atlantic Region recognition. His 75.1 scoring average was the lowest by a Marauder in seven years, and in October, he won the Bud Elwell Fall Classic and the PSAC Championship in back-to-back weeks. At the conference championship, Gilbert rallied from a two-shot deficit with a 1-under-par final round. His win keyed the Marauders to their first PSAC title since 2003. Gilbert was also the team’s top finisher at the NCAA Super Regional, placing 19th. 

His senior season resulted in more hardware as he won the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational with a 2-under-par score. He was also the runner-up at the West Liberty Invitational, which Millersville won, and he placed 22nd at the NCAA Super Regional. 

An outstanding student, Gilbert was named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar twice and PSAC Scholar-Athlete four times. 

Gilbert graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics and is now a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. He has been with the firm since the complete of his internship and graduation in 2015. Gilbert is the youngest alumni to start an endowment and has a named scholarship established for men’s golf. He proudly served as the head the Millersville University Alumni Association finance committee during the COVID-19 pandemic and proposed the funding of $25,000 to aid athletics, which was passed by the board. Conor is a proud son of Corinne and Thomas Gilbert. Conor and his wife, Heather, reside in Millersville and frequent events supporting the University.
