Marauders edge Shippensburg 16-12 in road victory

SHIPPENSBURG Pa. – After lightning delayed the start time by an hour, the Millersville women's lacrosse team powered through the Raiders on Saturday afternoon for a 16-12 PSAC East victory. With the scored tied 3-3 after the first, the Marauders blanked Shippensburg 5-0 in the second quarter to create a comfortable lead the Raiders would never recover from. Millersville improves to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in the PSAC East, while Shippensburg drops to 1-13 overall and 0-9 in conference action. 

Scoring four goals each to lead the Marauders' offense was Hayden Corcoran and Ella Linthicum. Rachel Keeney recorded three goals and Ashlyn Simonetti tallied two. Mary Moraca, Charlotte Lasak, and Liv Genovese all scored one goal each. 

Simonetti led Millersville in assists with three which increased her season total to 24. The sophomore is now tied at 8th place with 1992 graduate Sue Graham and 2017 graduate Renee Landis for Millersville's single season assist record. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Shippensburg jumped out first to lead Millersville 3-1 in the first quarter. Two Marauder goals from Corcoran and Moraca tied the score 3-3 heading into the second. Millersville fired off seven shots with five falling on goal and took one free position shot which Moraca capitalized on. 
  • The Marauders defense held the Raiders scoreless as Millersville tallied five unanswered goals in the second quarter. Shippensburg fired off nine shots with the Marauders goalkeeper, Morgan Scott, making five saves. Millersville's offense took a game-high of 10 shots on goal and went 5-for-6 in clears. The Marauders led 7-3 heading into halftime. 
  • Maintaining their lead into third, Millersville outscored Shippensburg 6-4. The Raiders scored their seventh goal to trail Millersville 11-7, but the Marauders scored three additional goals under three minutes to lead Shippensburg by seven goals headed into the fourth quarter. 
  • The Raiders edged the Marauders statistically in the final quarter of action with scoring six goals and firing off a game-high 13 shots, but Shippensburg couldn't close the gap before the final buzzer. After the Raiders scored three consecutive goals to trail 14-10 with 6:04 remaining, Millersville found the net twice to extend their lead to six goals. Shippensburg made one last attempt in the final minute by scoring two back-to-back goals, but their deficit was too large as they fell to Millersville in conference action. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Corcoran and Linthicum fired off a team-high of eight shots each, Corcoran landed seven on goal. 
  • Simonetti, Corcoran, and Linthicum led the Marauders in points with five each. 
  • In goal, Scott made 15 saves and led the team in ground balls with three. 
  • Keeney and Moraca won four draw controls each. 
  • Millersville forced the Raiders to 14 turnovers, five of which were in the first quarter. 
  • Shippensburg held the edge in shots (40-30), shots on goal (27-23), ground balls (14-11), draw controls (20-12), and free-position shots (10-3).

  • The Marauders return to Biemesderfer Stadium on Saturday, Apr. 22 for Senior Day. Millersville will face-off with the Kutztown Golden Bears for a 1 p.m. start time.
