Women's lacrosse falls in overtime opener to Jefferson

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Millersville women's lacrosse team opened their 2023 campaign against Jefferson on Saturday afternoon. The tight match-up was forced to overtime action where the Marauders fell to the Rams 12-11.  

Millersville held a 9-6 lead after the half, but the Rams three unanswered goals in the third quarter evened the playing field heading into the fourth quarter. The Marauders looked to secure a victory after scoring two goals early in the fourth, but a resistant Jefferson offense answered with two goals of their own to send the game into overtime. The Rams sealed the deal with 1:41 remaining to secure the win over Millersville.  

Hayden Corcoran and Ella Linthicum led the Marauders on the offensive end with three goals each. Liv Genovese notched two goals while Rachel Keeny, Charotte Lasak, and Kaleigh Funk tallied one. Ashlyn Simonetti led Millersville in assists by dishing out two.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
 • The Maraduers were on the board quick as Linthicum scored Millersville's first goal in the first 15 seconds. Back-and-forth action prevented either team from pulling away. With the score 4-4, the Marauders scored two goals in the last two minutes of the first to lead Jefferson 6-4.
•Millersville held a four-goal edge early in the second from Corcoran and Linthicum goals. The Rams tallied two of their own to trail 8-6 with 11:20 remaining. Corcoran scored her third goal of the game with 6:24 till halftime which gave the Marauders a three-goal lead to enter the third.
•Jefferson erased their deficit as they scored three unanswered goals in the third to tie the game 9-9 heading into the fourth. The Marauders opened the fourth quarter by regaining their lead against the Rams. Funk notched her first goal of the season with 5:32 remaining and hoped to create distance for the Marauders, but two goals from the Rams tied the score 11-11 to send the match-up into overtime.
•Jefferson gained control of the draw to quickly move action into their offensive end. The Rams maintained possession for over a minute which led to Audrey Strock securing the 12-11 victory for Jefferson. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
• Corcoran fired off a team-high eight shots, all of which were on goal.
Taiyana Goldsborough, Morgan Scott, and Corcoran scooped up three ground balls each.
•Millersville forced Jefferson to 20 turnovers compared to their 18.
•'Ville held the edge in shots, 30-25.
•Scott recorded seven saves for the Marauders.

• "I saw a young and new team that battled it out to the last second. We have things to work on, but we will be ready for Wednesday's game versus Holy Family. It's a young team and they worked for every goal today. We will continue to get comfortable with each other and improve every game."  
 
UP NEXT 
• Millersville will gear up for their first away game of the season on Wednesday Mar. 1. The Marauders will face-off with Holy Family with the first draw at 4 p.m.
