ABOUT THE GAME

  • Millersville hits the road to take on first the Edinboro Fighting Scots and then the Mercyhurst Lakers in a back to back. The Marauders enter with a record of 3-5 on the season, the Scots sit at 3-4, and the Lakers are 6-2.  It will be their first taste of road PSAC Crossover action after going 1-1 against California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock last weekend in Millersville.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville looks to push its conference record above .500 after defeating non-conference opponent Goldey Beacom 58-49 on Dec. 14. Makiah Shaw and Sophie Elstone led the way, scoring 23 and 16 points respectively.
  • Shaw has been their go-to scorer so far this season with a team-leading 12.8 points per game. She's been the only Marauder to top 20 points in a game thus far, with her effort against Goldey-Beacom being the second time. The junior's also been efficient from the free throw line, knocking down 87 percent of her attempts.
  • Two other six-footers, La'Shyra Williams (9.9) and Morgan Mahoney (7.0), are second and third on the 'Ville in scoring. Both have started multiple games this season next to Shaw. Williams is tied with Shaw for the number of times reaching double digits in a game with four, and has done so on an efficient 61.5 percent from the field.
  • Brenna Ortwein leads the team in minutes per game (31.3) and looks to make an impact on both ends of the floor. After recording eight rebounds and a season-high five steals last time out, the 5'7" junior leads the team in both categories.
  • Sophie Elstone is just behind Ortwein in minutes per contest (30.8) and steals per contest (1.3) and notched her best all-around effort of the season against Goldey-Beacom. Her 16 points was a season high and her four steals matched a season-high. The senior transfer also found her shooting stroke, knocking down her first three three-pointers of the season.
  • Graduate Student Jabria Ingram has been the main guard option off the bench for Kira Mowen so far this season. She's shown poise and and patience with the ball in her hands this season, pacing the Marauders in assists per game at 3.1.
  • Sophomore guard Jillian Crawford earned the first start of her career against Goldey Beacom and has provided shooting off the bench for the Marauders. She was critical in the team's Nov. 12 victory over Shaw, scoring a team-high 18 points on six-of-nine from the field.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING SCOTS

  • Edinboro is coming off of a thrilling overtime victory over Charleston (W.Va.) on Dec. 14. Allyson Kirby hit a go-ahead three with 2.8 seconds remaining to give the host Scots the 95-94 win. The Scots were able to capture the win despite allowing Charleston to shoot 56.5 percent on field goals for game because they turned the ball over just 13 times to the Golden Eagles' 27.
  • Two guards shoulder the bulk of the scoring load for Edinboro, namely junior Hayley Sims and senior Morgan Gentile. This is nothing new for Sims, as she averaged 14.2 points per contest last season and was named to the PSAC West All-Conference First Team. The junior is shooting 36.8 percent from the field while knocking down her threes at a 41.7 percent clip. She also paces the team in blocks while grabbing the second most rebounds in her team-high 36.4 minutes per game.
  • Gentile has more than doubled her scoring average from last season (6.1 to 15.6) while pacing Edinboro in rebounding (5.4 per game), assists per contest (2.6) and steals per contest (2.7). She had her best game as a Scot against Charleston with 36 points on 12 of 18 from the field and 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. The native of Athens, Pa. tallied five rebounds, six assists and five steals as well.
  • As a team, the Scots have shot it at 36.8 percent while allowing their opponents a 43.4 percent mark. They average 18.6 giveaways per contest while forcing 19.4 on the other end. Opposing teams have averaged 74.4 points per game thus far as well.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS

  • Mercyhurst enters red-hot, having won its last six games entering the Dec.18 matchup against West Chester. Both Millersville and Mercyhurst will be on the second half of a back-to-back for Tuesday's contest. The back-to-back comes 11 days after the Lakers' last game, a 55-42 victory over Tiffin on Dec. 7.
  • In their eight contests so far, the Lakers have racked up an average point differential of 11.6 while holding opponents to just 34.1 percent shooting, nearly eight percent less than their own mark of 42.0 percent. Mercyhurst also brings a smaller roster to the table, as just one player is listed as six-feet tall or greater.
  • Junior Danielle Grim has been an all-around force so far this season. To start, she's averaging 13.6 points per game, good for second on the team. She leads the Lakers in every other counting statistic, racking up 9.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. Grim's totaled 12 blocks and 12 steals, which are both at least double the second-place player's number. The five-foot-seven guard snagged a season-high 13 rebounds while finishing two points short of her third double-double of the campaign.
  • Leading the scoring charge for the Lakers will be Bailey Kuhns, who's averaging a team-best 15.9 points per game. The sophomore is doing so while shooting over 50 percent from the field and has reached double-figures in every game but one.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This will be the rubber match in the all-time series between Millersville and Edinboro. The two teams are even, with 11 wins apiece over the 40 years of the rivalry. The Marauders have held the upper hand since 2020, winning both matchups, but prior to that was a much different story. The Fighting Scots won eight consecutive matchups between 2011 and and 2018.
  • The Marauders will be looking to defeat the Lakers for the first time in nearly a decade, as Mercyhurst has won each of the last four contests. The last Millersville victory was by a score of 61-59 on Dec. 20, 2014. In the seasons prior to that losing streak, the Marauders had dominated the matchup to the tune of a 7-1 record.
